Broken Front Shock tower on '58
Hello all. Quite a surprise I just found on my '58 Convertible. I'm wondering if any of you have experienced this -- I have to admit the design of this interface is not particularly impressive looking. It seems that my front upper shock mount has torn apart. At this point, I have not figured out a root cause but it appears that jounce bumpers are in place so a suspension overtravel is unlilkely. These shocks have been on the car for the 7 years I've owned it so I've not clue whether or not they are correct: Surely if too short then we'll have a stress problem at full rebound and vice versa!
At any rate, I am surmising that I'll have to pull the spring to get this mount out -- assuming it's just trapped into the frame by the spring and not welded or rivetted. I suspect I'll never find a good replacement for this thing so will have to creative with the welder and some extra material for beef.
Anybody got thoughts? Figured I'd share this as it's a bit freakish.
thanks.
In car position -- this view peeking down beside the battery tray.
As removed from car.....hood torn off from the larger diameter section that rides along the spring seat

Interesting, looks repairable if you have welding skills and it sounds like you do. I've never seen that other than 4x4 rock crawling stuff where everything eventually breaks. I'd put new shocks in it that you know that are correct for your car, shouldn't break there...Tedd

The removed shock is 15.5" extended length and 10 3/4" collapsed. (Bolt center to center). It is not labelled with any brand name, but p/n seems to be 725621. "Made in Mexico" it prominent. It has another set of numbers which are likely internal p/n's and date code , maybe: 003153 follwed by 0780. (I know this car was gone over in the 80's, so am assuming the 0780 is month/year of manufacture maybe.
Thanks for asking.

I looked one up in NAPA and it shows the compressed length of 9.93 Thats 3/4" shorter and might just be enough to make the difference ? I chose a Dynamic 88 as the model. Dont know if yours is different. The extended length is the same as yours 15.54"
