I have a 71 442. My air cleaner base has 2 snorkels. Im going to put a ram air hood on my car. I know that I can’t use my base. Is there a difference between 70-72 cutlass or 442 base for ram air hood?
I had the original single snorkel air cleaner base on my recently restored 1971 442 and then switched to the 1968 dual snorkel model. Both bases are the same height and will work fine with the OAI RAM air hood. This is my recent config after I replaced the stock W-30 aluminum manifold and added fuel injection.

Yes, you can just remove the lid, replace the air filter and use the smaller lid from the ram air cleaner, and then install the top flapper on your 71 air cleaner if you wish. Wouldn't look "factory" correct, but the 71 air cleaner is the same as the standard air cleaner as far as base dimensions.
