68 Cutlass cigarette lighter

Will the **** on my old lighter unscrew and thread onto a new one or do I have to stay with the old one in order to have the correct ****?

Yep. The element has a stud on it that just screws out of the ****.
I believe the replacement element is available and is known as a 'Rochester type' element.

The **** itself is the valuable piece for '68 !
