56 Olds 88 Water Pump?

Today, I heard a strange sound coming from my engine area while I was driving. It almost sounded as if it was a knocking or ticking sound. After driving the car for about 5 minutes, the noise went away.

Last week, I took my car to the shop because I noticed a small puddle of anti freeze on my garage floor. My mechanic checked it out and said it was a loose clamp. The problem wasn't a loose clamp because I still see the anti freeze leaking on my garage floor. The water pump was replaced last year and I've only driven the car 1500 miles.

Does this sound like my water pump is going bad or was the knocking or ticking sound coming from some where else?

Yes, it does sound as though the water pump is going south, but the tick/knock could be coming from anywhere inside the engine. Is it a low/deep sound or a high/light sound?

When it starts making the noise, lift the hood and see if you can better isolate it. A broom handle/dowel rod works great for this purpose.

If the water pump is going you should be able to feel the bottom side of the pump for drips of fluid.Usually or I should say sometimes a pump will squeal when it's going south I've never experienced a knocking/ ticking noise maybe others have....Tedd

Grab the fan and see if you have any play in the shaft. I had to replace a water pump last year and also felt the one I replaced did not have many miles on it.

The sound is a high pitch sound but it sometimes sound like a squealing sound coming from the pulley area

The noise kinda sounds like a high pitch squealing sound. While the car is idling, the noise speeds up when I accelerate. I sure hope this is not another cam that has gone bad. I've had two cams installed and I've driven the car less than 2500 miles
