I am trying to ID a 4spd flywheel that is supposed to be for a 70 455. There are a few sets of numbers on it but I don't see them in my parts book. The first set of numbers is 8249 and the second set is 8621077 or 677 i'm not sure on that being a 6 or 0. The dimensions of the clutch surface is about 13 1/4 and the outer diameter is about 14 inches. This is coming with a bellhousing #9785581 which according to my book will fit the 70. Anybody got any ideas??

 

If someone else doesn't come up with the answer before the weekend I'll see what I've got. I don't remember any numbers on the Oldsmobile flywheels. But they have a signature square notch cast into the back (engine side) that I've not seen on other makes of flywheels. John

 

Near my year? Does it give a specific application?

 

The guy sent me a picture of each side of it but I don't see a square cast in anywhere. If I can figure out in the next little bit here how to get a picture from my e-mail to here I'll put them up.

I doubtful that's correct, unless it's aftermarket. Here's a front and back of a flywheel from a 1968 350 and note the notch cast into the back. All the 330-455 flywheels I've seen have that notch cast into it. The 330, early 400 and 425's have a different bolt pattern where it attaches to the crankshaft. But they still have this notch. The only exception I know of may have been a dual disc clutch, the W37 option as it had a notch cut into the face. I had one years ago and don't remember if it also had the notch in the back. John

So if I bolt it onto a crank and it fits is that good enough to say that it's just an aftermarket version and ok to use or just because it fits an olds crank doesn't mean it is ok to use?

 

If you have a loose crank and can take it with you when you look at it see if the bolt pattern fits. If it does, then I would think it's correct for an Oldmobile and that your OK using it. I don't think any other manufacturers used the same bolt pattern as Oldsmobile. Looking at your pictures again I suspect this is for a Pontiac from the same era. If the number coldwar checked for you was off the outer ring gear there may have been other GM products that used that ring gear. The bellhousing from Olds, Buick, Pontiac and Caddy would all fit as long as they have the notch for the starter on the drivers side. I have seen bellhousings with both sides or just one side for the starter cast into them, so make sure that's right too. I'm just making a couple guesses here, maybe someone else can chime in and help with the numbers. John
