1993 Ciera Problems

Hi, I own a 93 oldsmobile cutlass ciera s 3.3l. I'm having a couple issues, a couple i have never had to get into before.

1. uneven brake pad wear on the front pads outside pads are very thin and inside ones are like new.

2. Play in the steering, about an inch or two.

3. high beams lever only works when steering wheel is tilted up and when you tilt it down it wont work anymore. Everything else on the lever works tho

4. car shakes after 70 mph.

Any info will help thanks in advance.

Well I guess that you need a welcome so welcome! Secondly you have a car that is not well used here on this forum!
You did not mention how many miles were on the vehicle

Outer pad wear: seized guide pins, bushings and slides. Clean and lubricate or replace parts entirely.

Steering wheel play: loose or worn parts, tie rods? jack up car grab wheel @3 o'clock and 9 and shake

Brights: must be a loose connection of some sort. harness to the smart stick or possible the smart stick itself.

70 mph. shake: again loose or worn suspension parts, bad tire or balance?

As for the outer pad wear, uneven brake pressure resulting from guide pins and bushings sticking or worn....

Steering wheel play... defective steering rack or tie rod ends... without jacking the vehicle and checking for tie rod end play, you won't know which is really suspect....

Lights could be a result of a frayed wire in the control harness, contact when up and no contact when down....

70 MPH shake... Could be defective suspension parts, or axle shafts.... If it only happens at 70 or higher speed, I would lean toward axle shafts....

Jonathan,

Welcome to CO. There is a forum that may help with Ciera specific questions like yours. Please stay an active member here, I am only mentioning this other forum as a source.

A-body.net

The primary focus is all GM front drive intermediates from 84-94. They are a focused narrowly on the body style of your Ciera. Just another option.

There's a metal rod running from t/s lever to the headlight dimmer switch, which is mounted on the steering column under the dash. Sounds like dimmer switch is slightly out of adjustment. Not a bad fix but requires taking about half the lower dash loose to get to the dimmer switch.

Has almost 196,000 but bought from an old couple who had bought new and have had it for close to 4 years. Have only had to do tune ups and replace the alternator because the wires came loose from hosing.
