I am attempting to rebuild my steering column, its a 71 automatic floor shift no tilt......does anyone know if you can get a replacement for this foam piece at the bottom of the column, if so where could i source one? Second question is the lever on the bottom of the column that normally runs the shift linkage for the column shift, can this be removed and if so how do you make sure you get it back in the same spot, im assuming there is little room for error if its slightly one way or the other from where it belongs.

I think that connects to the backdrive linkage so when you put the transmission in various positions it turns the collar to the proper position. In Park the collar turns so the ignition key can be removed. It also aligns the neutral safety switch so the engine can be started only in Park and Neutral.
So bottom line is don’t remove it, and connect the backdrive linkage from it to the transmission shift ear where the cable connects.

Yeah I figured it was in my best interest to not remove it but I don't think I could put new foam on there without it being off the tube, but if I can't source the foam I guess it wont matter anyway..lol.
