1970 442 Water Pump

Starting to assess numbers on my ‘70 442. Factory 3-core car. Manual transmission and non-AC. Can barely make out the numbers but appears to be ‘398681.’ I have no reason to think this isn’t the original water pump but would like someone to weigh in.

I'll take a stab at this. A reference I'm looking at shows that number as 1968-69 350 or 455 water pump. The 1970 without AC, without HD cooling, without W30 would be 404584. They are both 5.1" height water pumps so they would interchange. This is a reference I got from Chris (Octania) many years ago. John

Thanks, John. That supports the numbers I have, too. I need to get a better picture to check the date. It is an “early” build so I am wondering if it is original to the car.

What about the pump for a 3-core ‘HD cooling’ car?

I'm under the impression that HD cooling was the 4 row radiator.

John - I believe there was also a HD 3 row radiator offered. Need to check the PIM.

Correct, I believe they referred to it as a "Heavy Duty 3-Core" in the literature but need to confirm.

Regardless, I need to determine whether the core support has the shroud tabs as well as determine if it's a 3.42 car or someone optioned it to a 3.23.

The car has the 3-core top plate, plastic fan shroud, 6-blade fan with fan clutch and a 69 455 water pump. Unfortunately, the original radiator is gone but I've opted to replace it with a 3-core FE radiator. Assuming it's a 3.42 car, and a factory 3-core FE radiator, should the top plate then be the 3-core with the metal shroud as part of it with a 4-blade fan, no clutch, and a 404584 pump?

The FE rad tag code Radiator is considered an HD rad as far as 3 cores go.
If you're car came with 3:42 gears that is the rad it would have come with.
It also would not have come with a shroud.
A W30 with 3:42 gears did not come with a fan shroud either, but did get the 404847 HD water pump and clutch fan.
Considering a 442 still had 455 and the same gears, would stipulate it be outfitted the same.
