1964 394/4V matted to a 1959 jetaway.
Well your going to need the flywheel and flex plate off the 59 Jetaway. And I doubt the flex plate is going to bolt up to the 64 crank. The 394's used different flywheels, depending if it had the Jetaway or Slim Jim hooked up to it
Be sure to look at the water pump and timing cover to see if they match. Some of the oil pans were different. Make sure all your brackets will bolt up. They also used different fuel pumps on these 394's. I'm looking for a descent driver quality rear bumper for my '64 Dynamic 88 if you come across one please let me know. Thanks, Dave
You might check with Ross Racing (Toney) on this but being the engine is externally balanced with weights on the flexplate wouldn't you have to rebalance the engine to the new different flexplate?....Tedd
I'm very interested in what you're doing here. I have an option on a 56 jetaway for my 62 olds 394 to rid of the slim jim. wondering how you got on with the flex plate balancing issue? Are the 59 and 64 394s externally balanced so no problem swapping flexplates?
Ross Racing makes the adapter you are talking about (others are also being made)and you may have clearance problems on the firewall because of the diameter of the bellhousing on the Jetaway or a TH400 but I would also be concerned about the flexplate issue even though they bolt up each engine is endvigally balanced and would seem unlikely that they could be swapped from engine to engine. My advise still would be to call Toney at Ross Racing they do this everyday and may save you tons of grief in the long run.....Just my thoughts ...Your milage may differ...Tedd
Yes I had heard that tunnel mods may be required or get an adapter but if i go that path id rather upgrade to Th700r4. however I'm encouraged by this posted in 2012 by "Coldwar" ....
"The Jetaway fits with no floor pan work to at least 1962, I know this only because I have been involved in this swap several times down through the years, and I highly recommend this as this is a huge step up in enjoyment and durability. In 1963-64 they lowered the tunnel further, moved the engine/trans assy forward in chassis to gain further clearance, with revised engine front end housing/water pump/fuel pump and drivers exh manifold for duals....
So this appears fairly convincing that a jetaway will fit the 394 and in the 62s tunnel.I've since read it needs to be a 57 or later jetaway as 371 and 394s were externally balanced engines. So the 56 jetaway flex plate will need balancing if I'm to use that trans. Interested in anyones thoughts if u think this is incorrect. and keen to hear how yours turns out too Electra483.
