What's a fair price for a 3.08 posi? I found one that I think might be a little high though. Also, I'm not big into gearing, a 3.08 is really high gearing right (for more of highway use) but gears can be changed out fairly cheap right? I want mild gearing. Now super low but not wide open either but not a deal breaker. Guy wants 5 bills for this. Maybe it's my mentality that I can get it from a junkyard for like 50 bucks that making me think this is a little bit on the high side or am I wrong? Idk, what's your thoughts?
3.08 is a good compromise for city/hi way. If you're concerned about hiway mileage but still want performance, add a 200 4R to your build. It will give you virtually the same gears as a TH350 or TH400 but will give a final drive ratio of .67:1 which will drop your rpms considerably at hiway speeds. Also you need to factor in overall wheel/tire height.
Is the unit new or used?

What year is it out of/going into? Chevy guys consider 3:08 a highway gear but for an Olds or Buick it can almost be considered a mild perf. gear. ie. I am swapping my std 2:73 rear for 3:08. $500 sounds cheap to me for a correct functioning posi. Also, the carrier is usually set for a specific grouping of gears (if I remember correct) so a factory 3:91 ring and pinion won't swap into a factory made 2:56 rear for example. Also if I recall correctly, 3:08 was the top gear of that carrier series and the 3:42 had a diff carrier.
500 for bolt in ready rear end ? Or just the posi unit ?
I have been quoted from Monozar and 507olds around 600-650 for all parts needed to swap just a thought and these are new units also what is the rear 10 bolt, 12bolt, olds12bolt ?
