70 Supreme help

70 Supreme help

I bought a 70 Cutlass Supreme conv. Odometer shows 35879 and interior is all original and decent except the front buckets that were removed and placed on the shop floor for years .The car was wrecked in 1980. It was driven off a concrete culvert. Was told the original 350 engine was cracked and the 4 spd trans snapped. All the original 4 spd stuff is with the car except the trans. The frame, complete drivetrain and front clip were all scrapped years ago. Was told the rear was a posi. Of course, I am unable to verify any of this except by what the guy told me.


My question is: what would/could the radiator code be, carb #, rearend gear options. Im trying to put the car back as original as I can. Any other help/info would be greatly appreciated.


The car is burnished gold, gold top, and saddle interior (Z979 code on cowl tag). It has AC, 8 track, buckets with console, disc brake master cylinder.

The assembly manual has a chart that shows what gears were available with each transmission. The radiator could be determined by several factors such as A/C, rear gears, Y72 (heavy duty cooling and generator ). If your car has the original core support you can check if it has saddles for a 3 or 4 core radiator. There is also a chart showing the radiator options. I am unsure on carb, will check.
I was curious what you were going to do with this car. Glad you are saving it. To bad the original engine/Trans are gone. Good luck with it.

I would look under the back seat for a build sheet. May or may not be there depending on where your car was built. The build sheet will show what options your car was equipped with.

Already looked under the rear seat and found nothing. It is a Lansing built car. The gas tank was gone and the complete front clip was scrapped. He collected most of the parts to put it back together (rust free 70 front clip, 66 m21 trans, 70 350 engine). Would like to put a 4 core radiator in it just because. I know since its an ac car the rearend gears are limited. I have a tm coded 3.42 posi from a 68 Ill prolly use unless I can find a 70.

Dam sounds like a project but thats a prime year and convertable! i am only familiar with the carb in a 72 that number is 7043250 ra 148, if you look that up on google it will take you to some good sites. you should be able to figure it out from there

Would the carb number be the same on a 70 350 automatic? If it is, I can check mine for you....

That is a carb from a 1973 350 4bbl. Correct code for 72 is 7042240 for a 350 4bbl, and 7043251 for 1972 455 4 bbl.

from what Ive found online, I think the correct carb should be 7040251.

There are 2 carbs listed as Qjet for 1970 350 engines. One is the 7040250 and the other is the 7040255. The latter may be the one you're searching for on an SMT car? Just went back and re read your first post.

This is from the 1970 Chassis Service Manual. I think 7040250 is correct for a 4bbl. I wonder if the 4bbl was mandatory with the 4 speed? Hope this helps.

M21 not available with A/C so your car probably had the M20. No 3:42 or 3:91 gears with M20 and A/C. I would guess your car came with 3:23 gears.

edit *I found a chart showing the power teams for 1970. A 2 or 4 bbl carb could be ordered with either 4 speed transmission. 3:08 gears were std with 3:23, 3:42 optional.

The chart is from a factory brochure showing the power teams. There is one online here http://www.oldcarbrochures.org/NA/Ol...le-Power-Teams It is slightly different from the chart I used. They made some changes in the power teams during the 70 model run.
