depends on when the anniversary is. we went to vegas in july once,no more. we go in april now much nicer weather. is she a scenery person? there's a lot of nice places to see in nevada,valleyy of fire state park,red rock canyon park,grand canyon,hoover damn,then theres parump...hookers are legal there.

I always enjoy the Oregon Coast.

Our 25th is coming up in June. Going back to Myrtle Beach SC. I know it's a bit warm this time of year but we really like it there. Upper Michigan is good too. My folks are on Burt Lake in Indian River. Lots to do up there and some really nice lakes.

Yeah, always "warmer" than Michigan, especially now, but summers can be 110+.
Been raining off and on the past several days, more expected this weekend. It doesn't rain often here, but when it does sometimes it's a LOT, especially during the summer. We had flooding twice last year; there was so much water that some parts of town were flooded for several days after the rain stopped. This place is flat and just fills up, with no where for the water to run off.

 

I would just ask her where she wants to go.

Fly to Portland then rent a car & head to the coast. Start out @ Astoria & drive south for the entire length of the State. Fabulous scenery along Highway 101 & great food. Save time to do some dune racing in the southern part of the state & don't miss Cannon Beach.

There are lots of good places in the US. There are lots of factors to consider. Where are you located? Is this going to be a driving trip or flying? How long a trip? Which anniversary?

We go every couple years. We avoid the towns. We get up in the morning, Load up the coolers for the day and head to the mountains and not come down till evening. So many great sights to see there. If you avoid the towns it is not an expensive vacation. If you hang out in the towns you will go broke fast.

 

Rent a convertible and drive PCH from L.A. to Monterey. Carmel, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Malibu, Hearst Castle, Big Sur.... I love this drive. If you like beef, the best steaks you'll ever eat are at the Hitching Post - the original in Casmalia (just north of Vandenberg AFB), not the one in Buellton that was in the movie Sideways. There are a lot of good wineries in the central coast area also, so you don't need to drive all the way to Napa unless you want to.

Pick a weekend that overlaps with the Pomona swap meet. Even better, pick the weekend that the SoCal and NorCal chapters of OCA do their joint meet in Cambria.

 

^^ what Joe said, and wait till the August Laguna Seca weekend in Monterrey, still drive the PCH, (I have done it several times in a '56 Porsche Supercharged 356B roadster, the twisty's are exquisite! really Wow her, Stay in Salinas. Stop in at Pebble Beach. Kill two birds with one stone.

It depends on how much you like to drive (and whether or not kids are involved)...but if it's just the 2 of you, there is always the option of renting an RV and just driving the good ole US of A and look at at all the sights that you read about when you were a kid.

Believe it or not, w/o kids along to ask "Are we there yet?" the trip can be very fun and enjoyable.

 

We liked Pigeon Forge. But give Sedona some consideration. That is a beautiful area.

 

Sedona, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon - a great scenic drive.

I'll also second the suggestions for any of the west coast driving trips - San Francisco and NorCal are great, and that route could take you up to the Oregon coast which was also suggested. We'll be doing a drive from San Diego to Palm Springs in April thanks to a work conference in SD.

Yes, Coastal Oregon is awesome. If you have time also swing by crater lake. I think it closes in late July.

I have seen haystack rock, devil's punch bowl and some of the other natural wonders in the OR coast. It is a beautiful place! Also Multnomah Falls is very nice too.

 

How about Vegas! Just don't tell her that you booked the trip in November during the SEMA show. Let that be the surprise

 

Calif. is tooooo expensive for the trip. If you going to spend the $$$ for Calif. it is better to go to Hawaii. Lots of culture and weather is pretty good most of the year. Public transportation is very good. Food is great. If you over 65 yrs. old you get lots of perks, reduced cost for meals, transportation, hotels rentals, etc.. Stay one block off the beach and get a deal on a hotel. Google "stand by flights to Hawaii" if you got a three to five day window for really cheap flights!


My parents would drive to Seattle, stay in a hotel for three days and catch one of those flights that was not filled. Usually some tour company that had cancellations. They spent 4 months there, every year, for 12 yrs. The other 4 months they would stay at our summer home in the UP of Mich., then the next 4 months traveling in Europe.


I went there on leave from Viet Nam in June 1967, for 6 days, and it probably was one of the best places to visit or stay for an extended time I have ever been too.. The Hawaiians really know how to take care of the tourists!

We are not even millionaires, let alone billionaires.
That schedule sounds to me like $100k a year in expenditures
every year eh?

We are pretty much confined by budget to a drive around the home state of MI or perhaps East Coast sites such as the Maine coast.

Still trying to decide if we do one week, many places, or many places over a few small trips. Leaning towards Lake MI coastal drive, Traverse City briefly, on up to the UP. Pictured Rocks has a Kayak trip to see it from the water. We got kayaks last year and now don't capsize every time.

We have ruled out the mundane like blowing the bag o money on a kitchen refurbish or fixing up one of the '68 Oldsmobiles. Probably only half a paint job on the '68 anyhow.

We are not finding much lakewise or riverwise in looking at Pigeon Forge. No kids on this trip. Dollywood is not appealing.

 

If you are thinking of heading to the east coast and have passports, consider driving one way through Canada. Lots of nice scenary and the US dollar is quite a bit higher than the Canadian dollar again.

Vegas/Neveda are very scenic. Especially the Grand Canyon. They even have a train you can take from Williams AZ up to the Grand Canyon.

 

Try Glacier National Park, Banff Alberta and Lake Louise, and Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Can be done in two weeks with a rental car.

 

A couple guys have mentioned driving highway 101 along the Oregon Coast. Rent a car that handles well so you can really enjoy it! Sites to see along the way, maritime museum in Astoria Oregon. Air museum in Tillamook Oregon with the large wooden blimp hangers from WWII (I believe largest wood structures in US). If you enjoy airplanes catch the air museum near McMinville where I believe the Spruce Goose is displayed. Enjoy seafood in many locations along the coast route. If you enjoy fishing go out on a charter boat for a day. Sandy beaches, but also lots of rugged rocks and cliffs in places. You can google the small towns such as Lincoln City, Bandon and Gold Beach to see when they have events like the kite festival, cheese and berry events. Then drop into Northern California to experience the Redwoods. The massive trees just cannot be captured in photos, you have to see them in person. At times you can see Elk browsing along the beach, but take your pictures from a distance they're still wild animals and a large Roosevelt bull may be the size of a horse but with antlers. If you like, there's also at least a couple casino's along the route. Lots of sights to see no matter what your budget may be. John

I know you said you want to stay in U.S. but Look into a cruise. medditeranian cruise is very popular and not that expensive. You get to stop in few different countries. She would love that.

 

What is your budget, when is your vacation, and all other questions pale into insignificance when we ask WHAT DOES YOUR WIFE WANT???.

Wife and I just went on a cruise for our 25th this winter. For a drive go down the Blue Ridge Parkway from Va to Tn. about 400miles. We did it last year and had a good time. Will do again when the convertible is done.

Yep pictured rocks is always nice! MAW go to Taqhuamenon falls and going into Marquette on M-28 along the coast is pretty also.

If you have the passports? Cross over to Canada at the Soo. head west on 17 along lake Superior headed to Wawa. Very scenic drive, once you have gone about an hour into the drive. Just fill the tank before you cross the border!

My wife asked me to take her somewhere she has never been before so I took her to the kitchen.

 

THE PCH drive is definitley worth the trip. I have only driven part of it in CA and it was amazing. Could also fly into Fresno and take her to see Yosemite. Its truely magical but I prefer spring or fall to visit. Or just rent a car and head west in general up to the Dakota's and enjoy the beautiful country. Take one of the classics on the ole Rt 66.

 

It's not in the US, but think how far your US buck will go at the 20% exchange rate. Take her to the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal in July. It's the biggest, best in the world. Montreal has festivals every day of the year and some overlap. Also, it's the gastronomic capital of North America. Take a stroll or Calech (Horse and Buggy) in Old Montreal and/or visit Quebec City (150 miles north) if you want a taste of Europe without leaving the continent. My wife absolutely loved it.

 

Finger Lakes of upstate New York. Go to Watkins Glen State Park. This is NY wine country so maybe the misses will be ok with it.

What are your interests, history, scenic, culture, man made tourist attractions, God made attractions. We all are so different in our likes and dislikes. After 25 years you and your wife should have some kind of a idea what makes you happy on a trip.Don't do the opposite.

We have traveled all over the US in business and for fun, for me and the wife the northern California/ Oregon coast is truly magnificent and is a our go to vacation place. Others get bored in a few hours. Kinda like cars and woman everyone likes something different. Chose wisely, your memories will last a life time, make them good memories....Tedd

 

Alaska gets my vote, There's nothing like it. IMHO Hawaii is a long bus trip and [with the exception of volcanic national park] the same of stuff
