1972 Olds 2dr Hardtop Questions
I am in the process of cloning my 72 Cutlass into a 442 Option Package. My question is, could you order the car without the thick W-30 Stripes on the side of the car. I'm not big on the stripes or the Rear Spoiler. My other question is, did the Deck Lid have both pinstriping and the 3 pc molding (or 5 pc if you include the quarter panel extension molding)? Or did it just have trunk striping or the thin trunk molding, but not Both? I have a couple of pics attached of what I'm thinking about doing with my car but without the Side Stripes and Rear Spoiler. Thanks in advance to any replies.
If you look at the w29 stripes they are much smaller and more suttle
If this works try looking at this. is at:

Yes, I looked at them too. I was thinking about no stripes on the side but was wondering if in that year you could order the package without the stripes. I know in 72 the 442 was no longer a model just a Package.

1.) W29
2.) W30
The W29 shows appearance as the one in the comcast link with narrow stripes on side, trunk and hood, and blacked out faux hood louvers. The suspension is upgraded to FE2 but the drivetrain could be anything from a 350 2bbl to the U code 455. Yes, the 442 W29 can have a U code 455. I think the only reason people did that was for the Air conditioning and power disc brakes. Note: the air breather and air vents on the comcast picture are not stock for a 72 Olds, regardless of what the decal on the upper lid says.
The W30 required the W29 option because there were base elements required from it (some were delete items, such as losing the rocker panel stainless, standard grills, and body scripts) to complete the W30 package. The W30 automatically got such features as the X code 455, W25 OAI hood, dual exhaust, HD cooling, manual front disc brakes, 3.42:1 rear axle and cutout bumper. It also got front cowl braces, lower air dam brace and 4 speed trans. The striping package was automatically the wide stripe and W30 emblems above the side 442 numbers. It would not get power brakes unless it was ordered with a TH400 trans. No AC offered on W30 cars.
NOTE: One thing that most people cloning a 72 442 seem to get wrong all the time. The glove box script must say Cutlass or Cutlass Supreme (verts only, there were no CS 442's)
I have no idea if you could have ordered a stripe delete package on the 442 or not.
The deck wing (option W35) was never offered on the 72 models, period. It was discontinued in March of 1971, well before the start of 72 production. Anyone who says their 72 442 came with a deck lid spoiler from the factory? I'd call BS on them. It could very well be added after the car arrived at the dealer, as a dealer installed option at extra cost.
