Is This a 72 Single Exhaust 442?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oldsmobile-C...s#ht_523wt_886

Looks like this could be the bare bones 2bbl single exhaust 442 that was available in 1972?

Yes you could get the 442 in 72 with a 2bbl and single exhaust. It was just an apperance package. From my knowledge

It is pretty sad they called that a 442. It may be appropriate that it is green (my apologies to people with green cars).

Looks like it had the HiPo tailpipe delete package with the ultra rare rear muffler bearing support.......

In '72 the 442 package didn't include 442 emblem on glove box door, so therefore, Cutlass.

Non 442 in 72 had chrome rocker trim, 442 did not. This looks like a correct 442.

I didn't know the 442 came with Cutlass S door panels...then again, it's an option for a Cutlass, correct? I hate to start up a discussion that's probably been made countless times, but what about the W-25 hood? I knew you could order a 442 with a 350, single exhaust, 2 bbl, etc. in '72 since it was only an option and not a model. But it's even bench/column shifted... what did the buyer pay for, a Cutlass S with 442 Badges and some better suspension? Very weird... and cool!

I would agree with that. The dark green like your car with black vinyl top is one of my favorite combos.

I agree, this is a weird car......I guess it confirms the argument that the 2 in 442 really did mean two door

Yes it should read Cutlass. If this was a Cutlass Supreme rag top with the W-29 option then the dash would have a Cutlass Supreme emblem.

And what is a "Four Forty two"?.... you've been around long enough to know it is a "four four two" not a "four forty two".

It's an option for a Cutlass, Cutlass S, or Cutlass Supreme, depending on bodystyle.

Yeah, it's a counterpart to hood style "Fo Fo Two"

Where's the 4 on the floor the 4 bbl & 2 dual exhaust. How can that be a 4 4 2 looks like a Cutlass S with a couple brand new 4 4 2 badges. If it is my brain is sure to start hurting as just when I thought I had all this F85, A body, G body, W 30, 25, 29, 442 stuff down. Ouch brain freeze.

If you thought you had all this stuff down, then you would have known that the 4-speed aspect of the 4-4-2's name was long gone by 1972.

First 1964 442 = 4 bbl, 4 spd, Dual exhaust- correct?
Next 1965 442 = 4bbl, 400, Dual exhaust- correct? Now available w/ automatic.
So then in 1970 it has a 455... Now what does 442 mean?
Then in 1972, apparently could get a 442 with a 2 bbl, automatic and single exhaust....
Did they put a V6 in the later 442's? How about a 4cyl?

I did actually no that also new that it was strictly a performance and or suspension package by 72 hence my brain hurting.

I guess it's a easy clone then since you can do anything you want all the way down to a bare minimum 2bbl, single exhaust, auto. Hey isn't that called a Cutlass. Why would they degrade the 442 name they were so proud of as late as 69,70

Alrighty let me educate some folks on the 72. The H is the vin tag says it is a 350 two bbl single exhaust. Yes it has S door panels since it is a G87 body. (Cutlass S) W29 442 option could be order on the cutlass bodies except Supreme. If you look at the hood, only 442's got the Oldsmobile script on drivers side of the hood. The stripes on the body are correct. What the W29 gave you was 442 badges, side stripes, hood stripes if non OAI and FE2 suspension. If you look at the car, it was build in Cali. Z code. Built around November 71 due to low six digits in vin. Color Pine Hurst Green with green stripes.
regards

1972 base 442

Of course it was available on the Supreme Convertible but not on the Cutlass Supreme hardtop. This is common knowledge.

I got tired just reading this thread. The car is without a doubt a base model 1972 Cutlass S with the W-29 appearance and handling package option. Rarely seen today I saved the photos because this is what they looked like when built. I am confused by all the confusion & doubt. W machiness post is spot on.

Because insurance rates were skyrocketing and this was a way around the high insurance rates.

My car was registered new as a 1972 Cutlass. The fact that it had the S option, the W-29 option & the W-30 option is all gravy today but saved the original owner a ton of $ on insurance in 1972 & the years to follow.

Yes they did, many do not remember the 1991 Olds Calais Quad 4. They had a W41 option 442 which was a four cylinder that produced 190 hp. May not be a rear drive 442 we all know but pulling high 14s in the qtr was great for that year. Only just over 200 W41s were produced.

Yes but the reason was that it was just a Cutlass. 68-71 cars had the 344 on the trim tag which says it is a 442. From 64 to 67 the 442 was an option and in 72 it went back to an option rather than a designated model. I started this post because I thought this car was legit and knew there could be single exhausted 2bbl 350 442's in 72 but I never reclled actually seeing one. If this car was special ordered it seems he just wanted 442 badges on the car. After that and the other appearance items he got a pretty ho hum Cutlass with HD suspension.

Has anyone determined if this an original paint car? I think that might help figure this out. I'm surprised there aren't more '72 442s like this to be honest. Considering what you got for (I think it was) $39.00 it was a "heckuva deal". The ordering info. clearly states the W29 option was available with any engine.

To answer a previous question, the OAI hood was only available with the M code cars (350, 4bbl, dual exh)....and all 455's of course.

I would say the paint could be original, I think the clincher is if the black body stripe is correct. For the paint to look this good the car would have to be garaged and taken care of thru the years. But where the the rot is coming thru it appears to have some bondo bubbling? And the trunk rot looks worse than it should with the shiny paint on the exterior.

I think by 72 the 442 was well known for what it was and buyers should have been really disappointed by what was available, represented in such a car as this one. Times they were a changing....
