Arrow Data Tag Decoder Beta

UPDATE: It is now working.
Sorry about that, let's try this again...

After a few months of work I have developed a cowl tag decoder online that I am hoping that people will find useful. It is not prettied up yet but I am working on that as time permits.

It covers all GM products (except trucks) from 1964-1972 with more years coming depending on response. For those who would like to try it out, please go to:

http://datatagdecoder.com/_beta/form.html

To use the decoder, you start by entering the year, then GM division, then body, then fill in the rest of the blanks.

Positive and negative feedback is appreciated. If you find a missing code, a code that is in error, a general webform problem or have any questions or suggestions you can email me at:
datatagdecoder@gmail.com

This information is pulled from the best possible resources available and is not likely complete but I as this is a first attempt I am hoping that it can be something that will help us as Olds guys and the greater GM car community as a whole.

Thanks for your consideration.

Nothing happens on the drop down boxes. I tried reloading and still nothing doing. Good idea though. I'd like to see it work.

Great work! Plenty of people will take of advantage. I suggest making a sticky and placing under General Discussion...

Thanks

X2 on the sticky! Well deserved and will keep a lot of cowl tag decode posts down. I wonder how accurate it is with a '65 442? It seemed there was always questionable items on them in the past. Especially highly optioned ones.

Just ran a '66 Grand Prix VIN - 266576C1xxxxx & Fisher Plant body code "BC" doesn't appear on your list.

Thank you. I am not sure if I have permission to make it sticky but if nothing else I can request it.

The next big part of the project is to make a pretty page to surround the decoder page and of course add/edit codes as needed. I am working on things as quickly as I can and will update everyone as soon as major events happen.

For those that have a missing or incorrect code, all that I ask for is proof that the code is correct by submitting some form of documentation be that a factory publication or universally accepted source.

I would like to also ask that anyone who has a 64-72 Chevy, Buick, Caddy, or Pontiac give it a try as well.

The $64,000 question for sure. Hope we can get some more input.

Seemed to work okay but missing C60 and 588 so I put 288 in the TR (interior)

The plant is Southgate, CA VS. Fremont, CA - not sure if it was part of the same facility but the "BF - Fremont" layout is the same & works for the accessory codes.

...... but I don't think the paint code should've came up different??

Paint code "T" for a '66 Pontiac should all be the same - NO??

I see GAOldsman had the decode as a '65 & it was decoded as a '65 color

Nice stuff. I was going to work on making one of these as well but never found enough time to compile all the reference information. Good work

Worked well. Only one issue. There were no options for acc placing #3. Just dashes. I have a B Which I believe is rear defrost.

588 is in the dropdown menu pretty close to the bottom quarter of the list so I think we are good on that one.

C60 is on me. I will need to tweak the code so that South Gate Pontiacs do not pull the 5 accessory list and use the similar Fremont RPO codes instead. That one will take me a couple of days to get done, but good catch.

The ACC codes for non-Fremont pre '68, especially Olds, Pontiac, and Buick is tricky. Chevy is pretty well documented.

Many of the same codes were used across all divisions in a year, operative word, many, certainly not all. This is one of the rare instances where consensus may dictate the definition of a code until other evidence comes up.

The question I have (assuming this is your cowl) is;
If you have a B in group 3, do you have (or did you have) a rear window defogger?

Are you referring to the paint color on this specific tag for 1966
or
are you referring to the code "T" for Pontiac in general?

Just need clarification of the question...

65 Fremont cars do not have a letter after the interior code, they used a number.

950 10 is black bucket seats. Your decoder only has letters in the drop down.

I was wondering about that. Are you referring to
10-11, 13-17, and 43?

Yes, the car is equipped with rear defogger.
Here are what the accessories were listed as when i first asked on here.

These numbers were used by Fremont. I cropped this to only show cars that had 442 option available on them.

Great. That verifies some of the notes I have regarding ACC codes. It appears in this instance that "B" was used for Olds and Chevy for rear window defogger. Other divisions pending.

"B" has been added to ACC Group 3.

Thanks!

What about moving the activate button to the middle or right side of the page? Seems more ergonomic to me.

Thanks for the suggestion Diego. This is planned the next page design release which should be in the next couple of days. I was going to go for the middle, but the right side might make more sense now that you mention it.
Also the Correction Request link will be active as well as some other links added for feedback, facebook, twitter, etc.

Did you test it out to see if your codes were what you expected?

Do you have the rest of this page or know where I can find it? I looked on WAC and they only have the letters, not the numeric for 64-65.

I edited my above post in reference to '66 Pontiac paint code "T".

Decoding a '67 Turnpike & "3U" doesn't show under the accessory & I don't know what it represents. There are a couple members that have the code but we've been unable to determine what the actual option is.

I would remove the 442 & Turnpike reference on the decode of a '67 (& other) 33817s (& I'll assume 33807s and 33867s) or all of the sudden all '67 Cutlass Supremes will be 442.

How crazy do you want to get? You could be the only site on the web with "complete" decode info.

"4C" = chrome side window sill moldings (B85) & your "2L" should read something along the line of (M20/M21/M22) although I'm not sure if the M22 would code the same "2L"?

I will check into the 3U code and the others mentioned.

I think the only reason that I described the Turnpike and 442 as options for the Cutlass Supreme is because a Fremont car has no ACC code to reference a 442 like a LAN or FRA built car, plus it implies (to the uninformed) that no 442's came from Fremont. I do see your point though...hmm...suggestions? Maybe I should elaborate on the description clarifying it somehow?

As far as how crazy...well after over 101,000 rows of combined data in multiple database tables, the term crazy is moot now.

I would like to have as much accuracy as possible and tweaking will be a constant. Something like this I never see being 100% done, I would be happy with 95%

At some point yes...probably in a few months if this really takes off.

I have quite a bit of reference data so if you need something specific for '79, let me know.

For the database:

1970 Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe (VIN 342570Zxxxxxx)

I got options

980, which is "Bench seat, Black" (100% sure)
B80, which is "Chrome roof drip molding" (Quite sure about this one)

Second option is not available/not selectable

Did you see that: http://www.justanswer.com/classic-ca...s-cutlass.html

Ed:

Ah, it's unter "Accessories". Got it.

24-Hour Mark

After 24-hours post release I am pleased to say that I have reached almost 400 decoding requests. Not too bad, thanks for your participation!

I am planning on leaving the beta site up for a week or two to update codes and get additional feedback before general release, plus this will give me additional time to make the website presentable.

If you would like to send your comments, suggestions and corrections and don't want to make this thread unmanageable, feel free to email me at datatagdecoder@gmail.com.

Keep those decoding requests and suggestions coming!

Continue and Reset button moved to right side of the screen below selection box. Should be a little cleaner in next page iteration.

UPCOMING CORRECTIONS

  • If pre-68 and BC is selected, show only RPO Accessory codes in top tag mockup, not ACC codes.
  • Add Fremont 2 digit numerical seat codes as per TK-65

Lightbulb Opinions please

hurst68olds brings up a good point. The decoder states the following for 3817, 3807, and 3867 (using 3867 as example):

"Cutlass Supreme Convertible 442, Turnpike Cruiser available option"

I agree with the thought process and I brought up the 'Fremont 442' wild card. As we all know there is no ACC "V" code for Fremont, nor an W-29 RPO code that I have ever seen for that matter, but there were 442's that came from Fremont.

To the non-Olds person, the above could be confusing. I propose the following replacement text:

"Cutlass Supreme Convertible (442's and Turnpike Cruisers built in Fremont plant (BF) should be verified with factory build sheet if available.)"

A bit wordy but it at least explains it a bit.

Ideas anyone? I am willing to go into a different direction...nothing is off the table.

Thanks,

Out:

I can't select my Fremont (BF) plant after selecting 40 - 3 - 4257 and the B80 (Chrome roof rail moulding) is on the same line as the 980 (Split bench) on my Fremont tag layout.

Other than that: Great work.

Ed:

A mouse over hint (for example for the date code drop downs) like "Date code digits 1 and 2" and "Date code character 3" would be a help
