Thoughts on wheel and tires from 14's to 15's.

Hey guys, I was looking to go from my SS-1's
225 70 14's with BF Goodrich radial TA's to
a set of SS-3's with Cooper Cobra GT's 225 70 15's.

Just looking for some input.
They are for the 66 442. Rims are black.
Of course those could be painted.
Thanks for the opinions Oldsmobuddies.

Going that way, you are losing 1" in rolling diameter!
If you could go to a P235/65-15 you would only lose .37 in rolling diameter.

Pat, you think a 235 would fit without rubbing?
Or is a 225 taller? I forget.

225/70-14 BFG T/A = 26.5" dia
225/70-15 Cooper Cobra = 27.4" dia

Seems like he'd be gaining ~ .9".....

To my knowledge no one makes a tire in a 235 65 15 size. Can you post a link to a tire in that size?

You are correct, but if you take the wording I had, IF YOU COULD
I am posting at you know where, Four letter word starts with (W) starting a thought and helpeing customers make for a bad combo!
Please disregard my orginal post and my apologies to all above!

To the original poster just follow others that have gone to the 15" tires and wheels, The Pack Rat has your dimensions laid out per size,
more concerned about speedo readings and tire clearence.

I'll ask about the wheels. Do you like the SSIIs over the SSIs? If you do, rock on. If you don't, but want 15s, have you looked at repro SSIs?

Be careful and measure for the fronts. 225-70-15 rubbed on my car before I lifted it up at the rear of the front wheel wells.

I do like the SS-1's. Just looking at going
a little higher on the stance and filling the wells
up some. I haven't had SS-3's on any of my Oldsmobiles
in the last few projects. I don't want to change anything
on the suspension other than wheels and tires for now.
I have a nice set of 3's, and would just like to get it off
the ground some. I can't even get my floor jack under it
without someone lifting up on a bumper.

Eric, what would you suggest for the
size tire on the SS-3's?
Also how did you raise your front? New springs?

They may work on yours, it depends on how bad your springs are. I raised mine quite a bit with a spring change.

I was just giving you a heads up on my past experience.

Thanks bud. Will take it into consideration.
Did you go with oem height springs, just new?
I have a set of new ones that I bought for the 69.
Wonder if those would work.

I used Moog 5272 way higher than stock. The pic below is the current height with that size tire.

I never really liked the slammed look.
They just have a more menacing
look standing tall, imo.

Your also running the 225 70 15's?

The fronts on my 67 are 215/70r15 Coopers. The Cragars are 15x6 0 offset. They are not quite 27 inches in diameter. My front springs are bit worn, but they clear with no issues. My rear height has dropped about 2 inches since my sig photo was taken, and the overall result is right where I wanted it.

The Moog springs from Rock Auto,
$104 to my door, not bad.

I just have that funny MAW feeling that
if I drop the lower a frame, that disc
brake set-up from a 70 442 out in the
shop will be screaming at me though.

I've got 2.45/60 on 15X8 SS1's all the way around. They rub just a bit if I hit a bump when making a tight turn. I'd use 2.35/60's on 7X15 SS1's if I did it again. They fill the wheel wells. I have original front springs. New rears with aluminum spacers to give me the look I wanted.

If you go with those springs your going to end up raising the rear also.
