Question Start Problem

The last couple of times I went to start the car all the "idiot" lights came on as normal, but when I turned the ignition key absolutly nothing happens. I tried moving the gear shifter (Auto trans.) around thinking it might be the neutral position switch off a little. I don't hear the solenoid engaging, or anything. The other night when this happened I kept turning the ignition switch and it finally started after about 10 minutes. Any ideas? Starter, solenoid, neutral switch, ignition switch? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

My guess would be bad crank position in the ignition switch or bad connection at the crank circuit terminal. See the service manual for the schematic of the ignition switch and see if you get power to crank terminal when you turn the cylinder to the crank position.

I'd try "jumping the solenoid"If you jump it and works then it's something ahead of the solenoid.Check all terminals for corrosion. I just went through this with my son's blazer sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't I change some and it worked then a few days later my son says Dad it's doing it again.

Sounds like the switch on
top of the column that the
ignition rod goes into.
Held on by two very small screws.
Or it could be a bad solenoid on the starter,
just my .02. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Agreed: Bad ignition switch and unusually bad solenoid are the two top contenders.
Easy enough to eliminate the solenoid by jumping the S terminal to hot, which would leave the switch, which you can't get to without dropping the column.

I would disconnect the big wire to the starter and have some one turn the key to start while I layed under the car and checked to see if there was voltage to the solenoid before trying to pull the switch.

Update

Update on the starting problem; sorry it's taken so long to reply. It was the starter. Luckily one could be easily located. Thanks for all the suggestions and tips!
