Silly question, but it's been several years.

I will be replacing the carpet in my '71 cutlass convertible this weekend. How do you remove the rear seat? So far, I have been unable to find any bolts that I can reach (like the ones on the front bench seat). I know that I am missing something obvious and it's driving me nuts.

 

The bottom structural wire in the lower seat frame is captured by two sheet metal hooks welded to the floor. You need to press down and rearward on the lower cushion to disengage the hooks, at which point you can lift the leading edge up and pull it out. The seat back is held with bolts at the bottom (visible with the bottom cushion removed) and hooks at the top.

 

Thanks. Are those hooks located in the 2 front corners of the seat or towards the middle? Just in case they're stuck (I have no idea when this seat was last removed), I want to make sure that I am pressing in the right place.

 

About a foot inboard on either side.

It helps if you are a smaller person. I originally used to cram myself in the foot well area behind the front seat, facing backward and then pushed to release the bottom cushion as Joe described. When I got too big to do it that way I had to figure out an alternative way to do it which just required more muscle.

 

That was a set up they should have used as seat belts!!! I like to broke my back last weekend pushing that seat bottom down and back at the same time and cramped up behind the front seats!!!!!

 

At 6' 4", I always remove the front seat(s). For me, it is difficult to impossible to remove the rear seat with the fronts in.
