1972 vs 71 cutlass molding

Hello All, I have a question about moldings on a 72 cutlasssupreme (not s type). My original plan was to eliminate vinyl molding on the sideof car or replace it with some kind of aftermarket or look alike molding.

Yesterday I was at alocal junk yard and came across a complete set of moldings from a 71 cutlass (3inch wide SX style molding) in near perfect shape. I was wondering did they putthem on 72s.

Lol if not would you add them to your 72? (If you were inthe same boat). I’m not trying to clone a SX! But I am adding an aftermarkethood dual scoop, just thought it may look better that putting a 442 strip downthe side.

As so my car is an original U coded Big Block car with 455,buckets, not bumper cut out. I don’t many of at all, Are they somewhat rare?

Lol tell me the truth would it look stupid or should I juststay with the OAH hood and some kind of strip painted and pin strip.

If you have any pics of this combo I would really like tosee them before I make a 6000 mistake for my paint.

Thanks

If you keep the '72 grills, headlight bezels, & tail light lenses, purists might see it as wrong/incorrect.
Also, if you do add those wide side moldings, that is several more holes you will have in the side of your car where water/dirt can get in.
The '72's never came with the wide moldings & instead had the rocker panel moldings.
Good luck what ever you do though.

The above pretty much sums it up.

I personally love the look of the 70-72 CS & I've always been partial to the moldings on the 70/1's.

When the day comes I'm in the position to buy one if the right car at the time ends up being a 72 ...

I'm fairly certain I would eventually try & track down the 70/1 moldings ... assuming the clips could still be tracked down.

If the clips are unobtainable ... no point in trying to go down that road.
(look into this way BEFORE you even think about drilling holes in the car)

While obliviously not correct ... I think it's a sharp & tasteful look.

I have a set I pulled off a 71 CS recently too. Only I'm missing one door piece.

The thing about these moldings is the ones behind the front wheel and the ones on the door are stainless and are attached to plastic body clips that mount onto the car. The door pieces also are attached as you know on each end of the inner door. The trick is having a set that has all the posts intact on the chromed pot metal pieces.

I have no idea what condition your pieces are, but if you want a comparison? Fusick repops the entire SX side trim and if you add it all up it's 811.00!

My trim has most of the metal posts, but the front surface has a lot of pits so they will need to be refinished.

If I put mine on the market, the good is they are OEM, the bad is they need help. I'd ask somewhere around 250 for mine. You might be able to get more. They used to go for more $$$ back when there wasn't any repops for these pieces.
