I have a chance to buy a set of 3.42 gears for 50. is that a good deal? What would that do for my 73 442 and does anyone know what stock gears are in there

Type O is an earlier rear end, and was no longer used in 1973, hence gears from an O type would not fit your carrier. You need to find out positively what they came from.

73 rearends are Chevy type rearends, 70 was the last year for the Olds O type rearend. I think in 73 GM used the same rearend in all there A body cars.
