Since no one has replied and Im in a meeting I'll take a stab...

<Quote>Got a 68 cutlass with a rocket 350 and I have a lot of questions.

What are the first 7 digits of your Vin? 366878M?

The Fisher tag reads as follows...10D=October 4th week of production.

68-33687...68 =1968, 336 =Cutlass, 87=Holiday Coupe, LAN = Build factory, Lansing Mich.

1st what color are the engines from the factory? Gold?...Yes Gold on the 68, 350s

2nd would the 68 have an 8.5 10 Bolt like a Chevy or a 12 bolt?...

No not an 8.5”, 10 bolt chevy from the factory. Most likely an 8.5”, 10 bolt olds “O” type rear end or possibly the smaller 8.2? Pull the cover count the ring gear bolts. You could pull an axle and count the splines or measure the ring gear diameter, that’s hard to do assembled. The 8.2 will have 1.125” pinion nut the 8.5 will have 1.25” If it’s not rusty there is a code stamped into the passenger axle tube. Or take a picture and post it with and without the differential cover on. If the axles are retained at the brake plates verses having C clips at the diff side of the axle that’s and O type rear. Only Canadian Olds got a Chevy 12 bolt carrier rear end and yours is a Lansing Mich built car.

3rd can someone tell me what color my car is from these pics?...ahhh Blue! No can’t tell what it is and it doesn’t match the data plate from the car so it’s been repainted who knows what color blue that is? What color is your interior, black with bucket seats? 940 = is Black Strato bucket seats. To the left of the word Paint or PNT is that a GG, CC or a combo of both? C=Provincial White G =Willow Gold. The first letter is the lower body color the second is the roof color. I think I see white coming through above the SS trim by the windows? But it also looks gold on the cowel and inner fenders under the hood. So your car was originally white with white top or Gold with a gold top or a combo. I can’t quite read the letters.

Can some post a link on all the W cars ,w29W30, W31 and so on… Google it many sites will have the info. Here and 442 dot com is a good starting point.

I heard the olds motors were lower compression and more tq that other cars of the day,is this true. No and yes. There are too many engine combos to answer this accurately. Olds had both high and low compression engines. What year, what engine, etc…Generally an Olds engine is more of a torque monster that other makes as it makes its power a little lower in the RPMs then say a chevy 350.

My car has air Condition from the factory is this rare or anything?...No not rare it was optional on the entire line up with few exceptions. Looks like yours has a modern pump. Actually the engine looks like it could be from a 70s model by the looks of the alternator, a/c pump and air cleaner snorkle?
Can you olds gods tell me anything about my car from these pics. Thanks for the help…see above!

Also looks like a front disc brake car and cruise control. Is that correct? I also think the windshield washer bottle is original and if it is still good, take care of it. The reproductions one, while similar, is not quite the same. The repops have a big notch in one side. It may not matter to you but someone who is doing an expensive restoration on a 442 or HO of that vintage may like to get their hands on that original washer bottle. Most originals are usually damaged.

The only other thing I can tell about the car is it needs a lot of TLC. Overall fairly solid looking.

============
factory small blocks were gold '64 thru '76 or so.

2nd would the 68 have a 8.5 10 Bolt like a Chevy or a 12 bolt?

All '68-9 Cutlasses made in USA used the Olds type 12-bolt- 12 cover bolts but 10 ring gear bolts. A fine sturdy rear end that can take anything a SB can dish out. Find out if it's a posi, and the gear ratio. If the code on the RH axle tube is rusted away, just count turns, or beetter yet, drop the cover, to inspect & put fresh goo in, and read the numbers [tooth counts] stamped into the ring gear.

I heard the olds motors were lower compression and more tq that other cars of the day,is this true?

uhm no. HELL no. Your particular smog motor will be lower CR than a '68 Motor. Find an old Motor's or Chilton's and compare CR's from one maker to another. The stock Olds engines in the '68 era were Low Compression at about 9:1, High Compression at about 10:1 [needs 100 octane!], and an Export option with like 8:1 pistons for crap fuel outside the USA. Olds varied the CR mainly by using different size piston dishes, though the SBs' cylinder heads do vary in chamber size over the years. Take a peek at the Olds FAQ or now a WIKI I guess. Note who wrote much of the engines stuff.

My car has Air Conditioning from the factory is this rare or anything ? Can you olds gods tell me anything about my car from these pics. Thanks for the help

I'd have to say at least in the frozen North yeah AC is pretty rare until about 1973 on a Cutlass. The guys who could afford a Big Car usually got AC though. Toro's, almost always.

Droldsmorland set forth a good bit of info. It's an "S" - Sporty model, like a near-442, in appearance. 442-esque wheel opening trims [missing on yours], 442-ish tail light lenses. Typically buckets and a console. MAYBE a faux wood steering wheel. What kind of power options do yo have?

I see AC, an incorrect much later g-body era [blue or black] small block. Ck the ID on the corner of either head, on your lower LH side as you face the engine from the side. Might be 8, or 5A, 4A, etc. Big characters, like 3/4" in height. That will tell much.

I do NOT see disk brakes, hella rare for '68. Flat tire. Incorrect broken LH mirror. Factory cruise control is absurdly rare on a '68 A-body. I suspect you have pcs from a later car added on.

Not rusted. Easily fixed weak paint. Readily found missing window trims [wheel opening trims harder to find].... Looks like an easy save and for that I thank you.

No you don't.
As Octania pointed out, you've got 68 Cutlass with a low-powered, 1980s-looking Olds V8, probably a 307. Looks like it was dropped in there essentially complete.

No way.
Your motor, on the other hand IS low compression, probably about 8:1.

Not really, but the cruise control is fairly rare on a Cutlass, and I think I see the actuating canister as well.
