Yesterday was Western Canada's largest OLDSMOBILE ONLY show, held at (where else?) the town of OLDS, Alberta. This exclusive show was spectacular with Oldsmobiles of all years and models in attendance. 78 cars were registered to attend and 75 of them showed. Others that didn't register, but showed up anyway had to park on the street. So all told there were more Oldsmobiles at this show than you could shake a stick at.

There was something for everyone. I noticed that a fair number of the Oldsmobilers were getting to that 'golden age', but there's also a mature up and coming generation that seems to be gaining interest in the hobby. As one of the fellows I talked with said, "I've been turning wrenches for 20 years, but mostly on Chevies, getting to know this Oldsmobile is a challenge to look forward to". And he's right, his car will take some work and he already appreciates the heart of his Olds is different from what he's been used to. But he and his wife have the right attitude you find in everyone who owns one of these cars.

It was nice to meet you too Dave, I met a lot of guys who I've only known through this site or email. Nice to put faces to the names.

My car was not roadworthy yet. The front end build I did last year has advanced to taking out the cooling and fuel system. I'm learning a lot as I go. Next year?? BTW, I really admired that 2 tone Gold 69 442 of yours. Inside looks like you only sit in it once a year!

Sorry that I wasn't able to be there. My wife scheduled a camping trip that I thought that I should go to keep my marriage intact.

Maybe next year? Yeah, keeping the home front intact is pretty important in today's world. Always has been.

looks like a great variety of cars. i really like the 98 on the trailer. someday i want another one like that.

 

Count me in for next year. I think that I might make it a family affair and bring the wife and kids. Please keep in touch on the timing.

 

It's a 75. There's a story behind that.... It drove to the show under its own power. But it blew a PS hose so it needed a lift home. The pump was really grinding away while it was being driven onto the flatbed. Color code on the car is 50 50 U Any idea what the U means? First time I've seen that. The owner was somewhat surprised to learn that it had been totally repainted. Showed him where to look for the tell tale signs.

A very nice car though with 455 heart and tons of power options. Inside of the car looks like it's never been sat in. Owned by a nice olds guy and his 'olds lady'.

Allan, actually we're Canada's largest OLDSMOBILE ONLY show. No car HAD to park on the street, they chose to park on the street. There was room so I don't know why people do this. Why bring your old car to a show you don't plan on entering? Why not just drive your daily driver?

 

It is simple Ken. These people are too cheap to pay the entry fee. I know this because I have had them tell me so.

 

Thats not always the case. I for one do not show my car, I however do enjoy driving it every chance that I get. That doesn't mean I'm cheap, I just feel my car isn't up to the same standards as others.

 

I did not say everyone. But I have met numerous people who have told me that they never have & never will pay to get into a car show.

They always park as close to the show as possible so people can see their car but they are too damn cheap to pay...some even take pride in not paying. Those are the folks who we do NOT need in our Olds club.

 

Allan it was a pleasure to meet you near the end of the show. And you were right, the wife & I really enjoyed the show & having something to enter in it. We were kinda embarrassed because our olds wasn't in mint shape like the ones around us but you & the other folks we met were really great to talk to and swap stories with. We learned a few more things about our "old girl" & are looking forward to making her mint again over the next few years (unless the right 6 or 7 numbers come up in the lottery then it will be quicker). By next year we should (hopefully) at least have the engine rebuilt & have something to lift the hood for.

 

Well Allan at least some of us don't need a reminder to take a camera. Some really nice and it looked like you had a great turnout!

Yeah, I've always wondered why the people who took their cars to the shows always had to pay, we are the ones with the product, go figure!

10.00 is cheap. And one of the guys I know came down on a spur of the moment (not even a club member) had no issues with paying the 20.00 fee at the gate even though he only stayed for about 2 hours. Yes, I guess there are lots of guys who expect something for nothing, that hadn't occurred to me as part of this show. Everyone was great and so willing to share. I don't usually go to the din din after, but it's not the money, I just don't want to be on the QE2 later when the crazy drivers come out. Right around 5 traffic is ok because they're all having din din themselves. You're so lucky you live in Cochrane - I love that drive from Olds through to there - the road is less travelled and mostly new. That town has changed a LOT in the last 30 years.

Even though I didn't have my car there, I put the money into the food bank jar by the dogs/drinks concession. Someone will get the benefit. I volunteered my help for the local food bank for over 8 years. The director - Marjorie Bencz (sp??) mentioned to us that while donations play a big part, $$ donations actually go further. Because of the way they liaise with companies for products, they could get almost 15-20 dollars in food value for each dollar they spent. Who says corporations don't help out?

As I told you at the show - you have nothing to apologize for. I look forward to seeing your car next year with whatever you've done. I will have mine there for sure and we can compare more notes. These MAW projects can't last forever..... I will be really curious to see if those quarter and door repairs we talked about work out. Keep us posted with a build thread and pics! From meeting your wife, I'm thinking she is motivated to help ya! Winning combo. BTW, if the winning #s come up, that ol girl will prolly be a trailer queen when we see it next, in addition to your new 'fleet'.

Harrumph! I didn't get an email from you to 'remind me'. I even remembered to take spare batteries. The only 67 there was that saffron / black vert. Gorgeous car. I knew you'd like that. I'm pretty sure I will forget something next year......oh crap, I left the wife at the mall........

Even if we pop the lottery this car will never be a trailer queen. She would look a whole lot better but she will always be driven. And yes the wife is really motivated to start doing things, starting with motor. She would much rather be turning wrenches than anything else. It will actually be a toss up between the 2 of us to see who gets to drive it on a dragstrip first after the engine & trans are done.

 

Way cool! Just recently this site was discussing why 4 doors weren't as popular as race cars. I believe you're about to change the book on that.
