70 Trunk Rocket Emblem

I got a repo rocket trunk emblem, and a new trunk lock. After i put the lock in i tried to put the emblem on, and the emblem hits the lock and won't sit flat. Unfortunately i sold the old emblem, so i can't compare the new to the old. Question, can you remove the lock with the emblem still on, or do you have to remove the emblem to get the lock out?

I've got a deck lid from a 1970 Cutlass 4 door and looking at it I'm pretty sure you'll need to remove the emblem before removing the lock. I can try to take pictures this evening after work if it would help. This emblem has bumps in the chrome but your welcome to it if that would help get your repop one squared away. John

Thnx for the reply. A pic might help, and would be great if you can do that! I might try and dremel the back of the emblem to see if i can get it to fit properly.

I'm in the same predicament, although my trunk lock is original (but has a newer ring gasket). The reproduction rocket emblem wont sit flush with the contour of the trunk. Not sure what direction i'm going to go, yet - too many other projects going on now.

By the way, are you pushing the 2 posts (at the top of the emblem) thru the trunk holes with the little retainers on them? Those won't fit thru either on mine.

I hadn't tried them with the retainers yet. But if they don't fit that will suck too lol.

Ok i just tried, and it's a no go. The retainers are different than the "Cutlass" trunk script retainers. Those look like they might fit. I wonder why they used two different styles?

The trunk lock cylinder goes in first, then, your rocket emblem over the lock cylinder. The rocket emblem sits flush over the trunk lid. They made two different rocket emblems for 1970. The first one had a spring wire built into the post to keep the emblem on the truck lid, and 2nd was two barrel clips that went into the trunk lid. These are only the two upper fasteners on the trunk lid.

For what it is worth, I have seen that problem you are describing with repro emblems...

Here's a couple pic's of the front of the emblem. Let me know if you'd like to see other views. From the posts it sounds like this is a piece the repop folks haven't got right yet

Shane, not sure how you're doing with this. I just looked at my OEM trunk rocket. Did yours come with a gasket? Mine did. I took some pics to give you an idea of what the OEM one is like compared to the repop. Also - the fasteners in the bottom of the deck lid are those acorn fasteners. Sorry, there's still a bit of dust from the frame sanding that was going on, but you get the idea.

I hate to even stump for a particular supplier but this is one part that is made by at least two different companies. My first one did not sit flat and detail was not exact. I bought one from Fusick and was not same manufacturer (easy to tell) and it fit much much closer. Almost identical to factory. Car is 70 sx conv.

I haven't tackled this project yet. Allan, my repo one didn't come with a gasket, and when i took the original one off, there was no gasket either. I got mine from Fusicks, so i would hate to see how the other companies fit lol. First time i have ever said this, but it's been to hot to work on the car lately. Imagine that, being to hot here in Canada! With the humidity (which is the worst part) it was 118 degrees here!

Know what you mean about the humidity. Yesterday was 84% this morning it was 88%. Makes temps feel really different than what the posted high is.

Can't begin to imagine how you deal with that kind of heat.

Worst part is, i work in a steel mill! Not exactly the coolest place to begin with. It was so hot in the plant, that there were a few days of working for 1/2 hour, and then getting a 1/2 heat break.

If anyway wants to avoid the hassle. I don't think the price is unrealistic.
