Has anyone shipped a Cutlass to someone else around the country? Recommend any companies and how much does it usually cost?

I had mine shipped from Kansas to MA. Was about $1100. This was a little more than usual because I wanted it on the top rack because it's a convertible with a white top and I didn't want anything dripping on it. The company was DAS, Dependable Auto Shippers, Inc.

Do any companies negotiate with sellers and do a cost on delivery deal? Seller wants to make sure he gets money. Buyer wants to make sure he gets car. Is there any way to give trust to both sides or does the buyer just need to completely trust the seller.

 

I used Gary Straight <straightroads@verizon.net>. Chicago to Denver was $950, enclosed, fully insured. It was all third party, that is I was not at either end and he loaded and unloaded the car himself. I had already paid for the car. As for trust - I do not know if Gary would handle the transaction - you could ask him. If not, and if you cannot be there you can hire a lawyer to go and hand over the certified cheque and receive the title and observe the loading. They usually charge about 2 hours if all goes smoothly. I used wire transfer because it provides a clear trail of the money and the documentation is readily accepted in any court. I was not too worried because I was buying from a reputable dealer.

 

One guy once posted Fed EX and said it was cheap and inside a truck. Never tried them but may be worth looking into.

and Agape beat anyone else's quotes by a long shot. They came recommended to me from someone on this site who used them many times in the past for car hauling and said they were always professional with no problems. No clue if they would be able to assist in the actual transaction.

Usually shipping is something that's up to the buyer to work out. I've had multiple Oldsmobiles and Corvettes shipped to me in PA over the past 10 years from as far as New Mexico and Mississippi, and I've sold and shipped out a few as well.

I had excellent luck with Herman Baker Trucking out of Ohio - he goes all over the U.S. I found him through u-ship but have dealt with him directly too after that and saved the agent/broker fees. 740.395.1924. hermanbakertrucking@hotmail.com.

One thing to watch for is whether your car gets offloaded from one truck and sits in a terminal yard somewhere before it's transferred to another truck. Bad things can happen during this time. Try and go direct door-to-door in the same load.

I shipped my 62 from Nevada to DC last year. It was not a pleasant experience. First, nearly all of the "shipping companies" you find on the web are simply brokers. Few even own trucks. They simply take your reservation (and your down payment if they can get it) then try to find a trucker who will get your car. Depending on the location of the car, the size, and whether or not it runs, this could take months. During that time they will entice you to throw in an extra $200 or so as an incentive for the drivers. I went through two of these brokers with no success until I finally used U-ship. It still took a couple of weeks to line up a driver and I still ended up paying extra at the end. The car did arrive in good shape.

 

I am getting ready to ship my car from colorado to reno and reno to riverside, ca. I just heard a horror story about a company tying down a car too tight and buckling both rear quarter panels. Ouch

That story about the rear quarters being crushed is true - I know one of the people involved. This was an all original '60s car in mint shape, never restored, original not faded paint. Now, in addition to replacing the quarters, they think they will have to do a complete new paint job - and all parts to come off. The trucker says he does not know how it happened. Yikes. Plus the buyer does not get to drive it during the summer!
For my car I would use an independent trucker who specializes in good cars. They cost a bit more but they have more insurance, and know what they are doing.

I had mine shipped via FedEx, Worry free. They have special made trailers and are all enclosed and out of sight. Mine was not the cheapest quote I had but in the end felt great about the decision.

fully enclosed from CA to TX cost $1100 no issues reported and was decently happy with service.
