trans question

trans question

now have a solid running 350 in my 1987 442. it has a 2500 rpm stall torque converter and 373 gears in the rear end. Trans is a 200 4R and while driving it the car does not start to move until 2500 rpms. So I realize this is because of the stall torque converter. but it will not shift out of 1st until 3500 rpms and into 3rd the same 3500 rpms, it goes into overdrive at 2500 rpms. I have tried to adjust the detent cable and whether I make it loose, tight or in the middle it does nothing. So what does the detent cable do? and is this trans shifting normal for having a stall torque converter in it? I never had a car with this type of converter in it but the way this trans is shifting seems wrong. When I get on it thats fine but driving through my subdivision its loud and annoying.

I've always had standards in hot cars, myself, so I have no personal experience, but I believe you are describing the function of a shift kit.

I thought the shift kit in a trans just caused it to shift into the gears harder. Not allow the rpms to climb so high before shifting. Oh and yes the 200 4R trans is a street/strip trans. So it was built for this I'm told. Anybody know about the detent cable?
