Simple 1970 M20 question

Simple question for many, not simple for me.

Is the shifter position for Reverse to the 'left and up' or 'to the left and down' ?

I owned a 442 4 speed once and IIRC it was to the left and down but I'm looking at some car photos on the internet where the the **** shows R is left and up.

Will someone answer this basic question ? I know it may only be the wrong **** and not the actual shift pattern, but now I am confused.

nevermind

I remembered wrong. left/up. Afterward I owned a VW which was left/down (pretty sure) which probably confused me further.

If you don't go left up, you will be left out!
