Found 1 1/2 hr motivation, until old man winter showed up

Well,I found about an hour and a half motivation in the garage, until old man winter reared his ugly face and I closed up shop for now.
Removed my cutlass rear bumper to replace it with a 442 rear bumper.
All was well until I got the old bumper off and realized I can't put the new used bumper on without washing and painting under there.

I just cannot bring myself to get in the driveway with the garden hose and a soappy bucket of water making ice in temps of 20 - 30 degrees.
And dog-gone-it! can't paint in this weather.

Here's as far as I got.
I was impressed when I seen the inside of the old bumper, pretty clean for almost 40 years old.

Well, at least it's pretty clean and you have a great starting point for when the weather gets better. My 69 was a lot worse with some rust holes for extra fun.

And I am complaning I do not want to go out in our mid 40's temperatures...

I wished my bumper looked as good as your old one!
New one looks great!
Yep, cannot put it on with the frame being dirty back there.
Just think of all the grime thats BETWEEN the frame and the body!

Wow, looks like its coming along nicely.

Uh, is that the filler tube running up to beneath the licence plate? I've always wanted a 70-72 Cutlass, and never noticed that. A quick search on Googles reveal no gas doors on the quarter panels that I could see.

If the filler is behind the licence plate, then it's official, I will not be able to subsitute a 70-72 Cutlass for anything else, because that is just plain cool.

Yep, gas filler is behind the L Plate on 70-72. Also on the Olds G-bodies 1980-1988!
Prolly on other years, too. And on the G-bodies, there is a curved lip on the L plate bracket and another on the flap, where you wedge the cap to keep the door open. I do not remember that explanation even in the manual!

Hard to tell from the pic, do you have the 442 hangers for your pipes, if not they might not line up with the cutouts in the new bumper.

68 and 69 have the fuel neck/filler in the same place. No nifty catch to hold the cap, though.

Rear Fuel Filler Pipes

My 72 Cutlass "S" has the filler pipe beneath the plate. Very inconvienent when you figure that most stations now have short hoses to accomodate side fills, but not as inconvienent as my 89 Caprice Classic. When I fill up that "boat" and chose the rearward pump, I block everyone from using the forward one. If I chose the forward pump, my front end sticks out in traffic.

What drives em' nuts is when you go to a full service station, and the kids don't know where to put the gas....

Thanks for the heads up about the 442 hangers.I didn't realize the dual exhaust with trumpet tips had special hangers.
I expected my exsisting dual exhaust to not line up with the cut outs in the bumper,so I was expecting the exhaust shop I choose would have to fab something up with the pipe.

I have a 2 1/2 inch dual system in place already. With turndowns at the rear bumper.
I was planning on picking up a set of the 2 1/2 inch Pypes trumpets.
I'll check the parts house's and see about those 442 hangers.
And hopefully the exhaust shop can handle the rest.
Good plan or bad plan?

thanks
