identity fraud

Looking for any advice from someone who has been through this or knows what to do.
My wife and I are finishing up our taxes for last year (we got extensions) she asked me about a 1099-K from google which was for just over 5K. I told her I have never done business with Google for anything and I dont know what that is? Turns out someone has my SS# and somehow got Google to pay them over 5K pretending to be me. I am now on the hook for the taxes. Google gave me a 1099-K for over 5K. I called google and they said call IRS. I called IRS and was told to call another IRS branch in MD. They said go to their website and download a form and follow directions. Fax the form to them.
Waiting on hold, leaving messages to finally talk to someone who doesn't know what to do is beyond frustrating. Have any of you been through this and how did you resolve? My credit reports have been frozen for last 6 months and I have fraud alerts also. I have Lifelock as of 6 most ago. I try to keep tabs on everything. This must have taken place before I locked everything up. Any advice?

When I had a similar situation ($12k for me), the first thing I did was file a police report. The detective was fantastic and gave me great advice to help work through the problems.

I still keep my credit files locked 20 years later.

I hope you get things worked out.

I guess Life Lock don't work so good! Aren't they supposed to prevent that stuff, or at least alert you?

The should be able to trace the payment you would think? They may have had your SS#, but where did the funds go? Can the IRS actually prove that you received the payment? If so, ask them where the hell it went....

After this occurs, you will need to get PIN code from the IRS every year afterwards in order to file your taxes in order to prevent this from happening again.
