'70 442 W-30 Ragtop W-27

I found an unrestored '70 442 W-30 convertible in one of my old Muscle Car Review magazines. It was in the October 2013 publication. It was being restored by Art "Bunjie" Bonneau. The car was original unrestored and had the W-27 differential. Has anyone heard what may have happened to this car?

Not sure what happened to the car but here's the write up.

There was a similar car (color, W27 rear) that sold at Mecum Kissimmee in 2020 but I think that car was a 4 Speed. It sold for $230k.

230k????? That has to be a high mark for any Olds. 230k....? So it can sit and do nothing...

I saw that car go across the block in 2020 - it was a very high end restoration. Maybe too high for some but it was incredible. All in it went for $247,500. And it was a documented (broadcast cards) 4-Speed/W-27 after refreshing my memory.

Very Kool W-30

While it had two broadcast cards neither showed the W-30 option. It does have a dealer delivery sheet showing the W-30 option. It has a very good history and didn’t just pop up out of the Blue. It also has a Rocket Report and certification.

The car was shown at the Olds Nationals as well as MCACN prior to being placed on the market.

The selling price is not the high water mark either in public or private sales.

I am curious if you know what cars are the high mark.

Yes, I am intimately familiar with some. So while I will not discuss the details of private party transactions, the public sales / auctions are readily searchable.

The highest dollar number I can remember at auction was the Rally Red Thornton’s Convertible which sold at Barrett Jackson. High bid was $357,000.00 I believe and it was soon thereafter deemed that the paperwork displayed and included with the car was fake or reproduced. The deal was unwound and the car was brought to another BJ auction where it attained $250,000.00 or so, with no paperwork.

This one attained $308,000.00 with buyers premium at Russo and Steele.

https://russoandsteele.com/highly-ra...auction-event/

I was able to find the original owners of this car who had been divorced for many years. This one is probably the best documented one to exist and the best original unrestored example that I am aware of. It sold well short of the auction estimate and the winning bidder was offered much more $ that weekend. This car was also at an Olds National event as well as at MCACN on several occasions.

I believe that we featured 10 or so known and documented W-30 4 speed Convertibles at MCACN one year and plan to have at least one 4 speed and one automatic there this year for 2021.

Thanks as always Joe for your wealth of knowledge. Great memory too.

I am sorry to everyone else and their favorite cars but...
There is no better looking convertible than an A body Olds.

Get out of here...

Apparently, this car is ready to surface and will be in Nashville. I thought I knew who owned it presently, it's restorer, and it's history and where-abouts. I will post later with more info. Purists won't like it.

I'm referring to the one in the thread title, Stephano. 1970 W-30 yellow 'vert w/ a W27, I'll post stuff after breakfast. Unless I misread it...I know it was going to MCACN. I won't post if that's the case and it was to be a debut car there.

I haven't actually seen it yet, I haven't personally spoken to the owner about it, but that's what it looks like. I believe it will be in TN.

Look at the post from tru-blue 442, The windshield posts appear to be red. I believe this car was originally red.

The red convertible auto in Mr. Olds’ photos looks beautiful - I wonder who did that restoration.

Did the "Maine Attraction" make the Nashville meeting? If so, could someone post some pictures. I'm anxious to see the finished product.

I didn't see the car you refer to as "Maine Attraction" at the OCA Nats in Nashville.

Nope, Paul is planning to bring the car to Chicago in November since it wasn't finished in time for the Nationals.

Does he have his paperwork in? Registration has been closed for sometime.

I'd have to see documentation on those w-27 cars. I have only seen a couple real cars ordered with that option. Mine one of those. Lee

W-27s are not reflected on the broadcast card so other documentation is needed to verify that it was equipped this way from the factory, like Lee's former W-30. Being such a rare option, just having one is a big plus,

So I'm guessing the original color was yellow? Seems like a car that rare, the original color would make more sense. But, I like the yellow better than the red, so I'm a bit biased.

Judging from the pics in this article it looks like the yellow was a repaint. There's red underneath

That was a super rare car. It's hard to believe that it did not have A/C or the dual gate shifter.
