Front speaker

Got a Retro 2 channel front speaker from Summit and no fit even without the mounting bracket. The metal speaker shell is to fat to slide up into the lip of the dash. Looks like the only thing to do is carve out the lip of the dash and that doesn't sound to be to good of an idea to me. Any ideas out there in Oldsland.

Did you get the 412 or the 410? The 410 is thinner.

That's a 6x9 speaker. The stock front speaker is 4x10.

Crutchfield sells exactly the same speakers as Summit. They just charge 25% more.

I used speakers from this site on my 69 Cutlass. Works great!

The OP is not looking for replacement OEM speakers. He's looking for an aftermarket speaker that puts two stereo speakers in place of the single 4x10 stock front speaker.

As has been pointed out several times in this thread, R410N is the correct speaker. Summit, Jegs, Crutchfield, whatever. It's readily available. And FYI, even the manufacturer's website is less expensive than Crutchfield.

Just a simple helpful statement. I believe the R-410N dual voice coil prefers a 4 Ohm configuration (as opposed to most classic cars which operated @ either 8 Ohm or 10 Ohm). Summit may or may not provide the 8 Ohm wiring kit (which is provided free-of-charge) by RetroSound. I would suspect Summit will provide the 8 Ohm wiring kit (since they're selling the RetroSound R-410N). In case they do not ensure your stereo is matched to the speaker. Good Luck.

Watch the video on the RetroSound site URL Joe provided. I'll provide the URL again here >>> https://www.retromanufacturing.com/p...nt=31329872270

Two 4ohm speakers connected in series will add up to an 8ohm load if they are being used in a mono configuration. This is close enough to a 10 ohm match for the original factory radio to operate safely at higher volumes. If they are being used in stereo, a 4~6 ohm resister can be added in series to increase the static resistance to 8~10ohm. Wattage of the resister depends on the amount of power being driven through the system. As long as you don't play it at high volume levels for extended periods, a 4ohm load will not harm the factory radio. In the audio world, heat kills!

In my previous reply I recommended: http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm. I should also note besides OEM they do better quality conversion speakers also.

I personally use their dual cone 4" x 10" stereo high output speaker in my dash along with two 6" x 9" high output speakers in the rear speaker shelf. Turnswitch also converted my original AM radio to AM/FM Stereo with blue tooth. Everything looks original to my car now. Their 4" x 10" duel cone high output speaker is shown on their website mounted in an Oldsmobile center speaker bracket. The center speaker also fits with my Vintage air ductwork without any problems.

The whole point of the dual speaker Retrosound unit is to play them separately for stereo. It would be silly to install that unit and use it as the stock mono speaker.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't see that option when I went to their website, but I didn't spend a lot of time scrolling around either.

Completely agree. OP didn’t state what stereo system the speaker is being matched with but I would hopefully suspect it’s not OEM. Yet, you just never know.

That would be the logical use for a "pair" of speakers, yes. However it has been my experience that no matter how you explain it, there will always be people that will insist on doing things differently. That's why they put instructions on shampoo bottles.

No, lawyers are why they put instructions on shampoo bottles (though the "REPEAT" part is likely just to sell more shampoo). It's impossible to make something idiot-proof because idiots are just too damn creative.

My loving wife once printed and framed a motto for me that read "Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool!" I found it disturbingly accurate...
