Dave - I hope you're off the trail before the sun goes down - it's looking quite cold in Northern VA this evening.

That is definitely a mule. My uncle used to plow gardens with mules. My cousin decided one day to try to ride one of them. He ended up being thrown up and over the fence in the barnyard.

That's what scares the bejeezus out of me about self-driving cars!😬

Mules are actually smarter than horses. A horse will work itself to death. A mule, well... anyone who ever dealt with one knows that when a mule decides it's time to quit, nothing is going to convince that mule otherwise!

rocketraider you are absolutely correct. Years ago I was down in New Orleans working on a project for a few weeks. One night a couple friends and I were out in the French Quarter and I watched a carriage driver parallel park a carriage. All the carriages there are pulled by mules. I went over and talked with the driver and he told me they used mules because of the heat and humidity in New Orleans. He said a mule would stop when they got too hot and a horse would just keep going until they collapsed. Something like only 1% of mules can reproduce due to some gene they have.

They're sterile due to the odd chromosome number.

One or the other would be sufficient.

True story (except for some)
Back when I started courting my future wife, I rode my mule to visit her one day. She said "That sure is a fine looking mule, is it pretty smart?"
I replied "Plenty smart, that mule will do anything I tell it to! Only thing is, if you're not careful it's bad to try and kick you."
She then said "Why don't you tell it not to."
I've been putting up with this for looong time now.

Way back in the day (early 20th century) a good pair of mules was a prized possession. I remember my dad talking about the pair of mules his dad had. I can remember one of them was named Dan. He sometimes used them to pull cars out that were stuck on the unpaved roads of the time. I have never seen a picture of them which is too bad. Here is a link to everything you may or may not want to know about mules. It is pretty interesting.

I used to go trail riding with friends in Texas.
However their real love was for Team Penning. I went along to watch, and to socialise with the other riders.
One time the husband let me ride his horse in the ring with some other riders and calves to see how I got on. Because the horse was real good I didn't make a complete fool of myself. One of the most memorable fun times I ever had.

When I was a kid I used to spend summers on a my uncles dairy farm in Midwest Indiana, they had two horses a Appaloosa named Chief,
a mare named Midnight and a mule named Ranger, Now my uncle was proud of and loved that Appaloosa but I remember him telling me once that Ranger (the mule) was smarter than both those horses put together !! while I did ride both the horses I never road the mule I did see my cousin ride it a few times.
And if it was good enough for Festus it's good enough for me . ( I always liked Festus better than Chester)
very nice have fun be safe !!!

Ironically, this vintage Olds ad just got posted on FB today. Count on Oldsmobile to "eliminate the danger of the horse's uncertain temper, sudden fright, and unruly disposition".
