Ignition switch replacement

Have any of you guys ever replaced the ignition switch in your Cutlass? I have a 71 Cutlass that is in locked position with no key, any suggestions? Thanks

If you lost the keys, either remove the lock set and have a locksmith cut a kit to match, or buy a new lock set. About 20 bucks, it does require some disassembly to replace.

The ignition SWITCH (which has nothing to do with the ignition key) is on top of the column, basically under the speedometer. It’s purpose is to direct power to the various circuits depending on the key position. Replacing the switch requires dropping the column to access it.

On a 71, the door lock uses the same key as the ignition. It's often easier to remove the door lock. There should be a four character code stamped on the outside of the lock cylinder, which can be decoded to cut a new key. Failing that, you can remove the steering wheel and lock plate to take the ignition lock cylinder out of the column.

I work in a parts department. The confusion between switch and cylinder makes me glad I stay at the mechanics counter.
