Hello all, great sight with so much knowledge from a great bunch of people. Here is a question, I recently purchased a 68 cutlass s convertible. My first Oldsmobile. The guy I bought it from did not tell me it was a 442 and the trim tag and vin tag both confirm that it's not a 442, but the title which is an Indiana title says it is a cutlass 442 convertible written on the title from the SOS.Anyone encounter this kind of thing? I'm not overly concerned about it but more curious.

The only thing that matters is the VIN. When I got my '56, the title said Holiday. It's not. I titled it as a Super 88 and off I went.

I live in Indiana, and I bought a 64 Vista Cruiser, the title had wagon on it, but I had it changed to Vista Cruiser. DMV will put down what you want some of the time. Like ignachuck said. vin is the only thing that matters. and I would like to know what SOS is also

 

SOS is secretary of state, That's what they call the dept of motor vehicles in Michigan . SOS=DMV.

 

I kind of thought someone just told them to add it. Just checking if it was an Olds thing..would a 442 actually be titled that way as a model? And SOS is Secretary of state. Who we have to pay our money to for registration of vehicles in Michigan...thanks for the info guys....

 

A 68 442 is a car, as is a 69-71. All other years, the car is a Cutlass with a 442 package. The 68 model year often had Cutlass cowl tags, but 442 vin numbers for 442s. The Cutlasses had their own vin and the right cowl tag.

A 68 442 SHOULD be titled "68 442." A 67 442 SHOULD be titled "67 Cutlass Supreme." DMV people, however, are not the sharpest knives in the butcher block.

 

Koda, I agree with you - some DMV folks aren't too bright. My '68 is a 442, per the VIN, but the state and insurance folks called it a Cutlass.

 

As far as the DMV, in Ca, it does not say 442, Olds or Cutlass. I have also had several Corvette's, and they say Chevrolet, not Corvette.
