I have a 1966 F85. The rear isn't limited slip. I have the opportunity to purchase a posi unit from a 1975 Transfer Am. I plan to do a mini tub, and narrow the rear accordingly. My question is...would the 1975 rear be suitable, or should I implement an Eaton or similar posi unit? My knowledge is very limited, hence the question. Thanks in advance for any responses.

 

The TRANS Am has an 8.5" ten bolt "corporate" axle and leaf springs. Your 66 could have come with either an 8.2" axle or a Type O axle. The only certainty here is that NOTHING from the T/A axle will fit. You can't even use the entire housing, since the center section does not have the ears for the upper control arms.

Yes your rear can be converted to "posi". An 8.2 isn't real strong but if you are running an auto trans and aren't making crazy horsepower it will hold up pretty well.
