1 ashtray in a 56 super 88

I currently have 2 56 Super 88s. One is a 4 door sedan without a padded dash, but with rear seat speaker, clock, power steering and brakes, courtesy light package, but also 2 ashtrays. The other super 88 is a 4 door holiday hardtop. It has a padded dash, no clock, manual steering, but only 1 ash tray. Were 2 ashtrays an option? Just wondering.
Thanks

Hmmm.

Where, pray tell, are the ash trays?

I have a 56 Super 88 four door sedan. It has two ash trays in the dash, and one on the back of the front seat.

I have the ashtray in the rear of the front seat on both cars. The hardtop only has one dash ashtray. The chrome trim is different than on the sedan which has two dash ashtrays.

Interesting? Don't know I have ever seen/heard/been aware of this. I do find it hard to conceive that 2 different dashes were used in the same model (Super 88) in 1956, but who knows?

Shall be watching for a definitive answer.

Me too. The Master Service Parts Book says:

I have the Super 88 2 door. It has the padded dash. 2 ash trays in dash and two in back, one on each armrest. My parts car did not have a padded dash but the ash trays ere the same.

I agree; a photo would be great and educational.

Hello Jatorocket. As Ozzie suggested, if you could post a picture of the dash, we would be able to bring closure to this very interesting thread

No problem Frank and no offense taken. I was just giving the OP a little grief over the pictures. You know how we are about pictures on here. I imagine you guys are getting pounded by the weather. Stay safe and try and stay warm.

Well, it looks to me like there once was an ashtray on the right side, but the tab has been snapped off. It may have something to do with the radio. That's not a '56 radio. Wrong *****.
Perhaps the right side ashtray was removed to make room for that radio?

Good eye Frank. I went back and forth several times and notice the same thing about the radios. I think it has to have something to do with that. Those ash trays are completely different than the 54 and 55. I know the 54 and 55 are almost identical cars but the 56 had a lot of changes in it.

Here is a 56 radio. Note that it curves around the right ashtray.

Actually Glenn, I had just watched back to back episodes of Lt. Joe Kenda- Homicide Hunter, and I was on top of my game!

I agree that it looks as though at one time there was a right ashtray. It certainly looks as though there is an ashtray cover plate, minus the "TRAY" tab, where the right ashtray would be.
