70 Cutlass Supreme - Radio question

Gentlemen - I am looking for suggestions as your input is valuable.
My car has a non-factory radio which I want to replace it without breaking the bank. I have the original factory radio and was thinking of putting it back (even though I am not sure it works, probably not) just for looks and placing the new radio in the glove box. I am also contemplating adding front speakers but every car stereo install shot that I been to would like to either use new kick panels OR install the speakers under the dash which I am not a fan of OR not install front speakers at all. The problem with replacing the kick panels is the manual break lever sits right next to it so it may be blocked.
So the questions are;
1. Has anyone replaced their kick panels to add front speakers and if so where did you get them from? Classiccarstereos.com has a set for $170, they claim it will fit a cutlass but does not mention cutlass supreme so not sure if it is a case of one size fits all.
2. For those of you who place the radio in the glove box, how functional is the location.
Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

These are pretty cool looking aftermarket stereos (bit expensive though) you should be able to get one for a LOT less on ebay. This is what I'm thinking of getting & then add amps, subwoofer, splits etc (all into the factory speaker locations, apart from the sub) my mate has one in his 57 chev & it really looks the part, but he did say it sounds ok (not great, just ok) you can plug in amps & subs later if you want to as long as you get one with at least 1 x set of RCA outputs.

Hi 70 Cutlass Supreme,

Im Not sure if you got my message about kick panels? being a newby I wrote a reply & don't know where it went so here it is again:
If you like the idea of kick panel speakers then here is a link for an easy solution;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-1970-19...odel%3ACutlass

Or just type in 70 cutlass kick panel in ebay.

Hopefully I can help with any car stereo questions, I used to do installations for a living.

Kind regards

Any of the aftermarket kick panel speakers for any Cutlass will work and clear the Ebrake with proper speakers. Putting a stereo in the glove box has been done a lot and works well.

I have installed a CD player in the glove box and it was better than chopping up the dash but kind of a PITA unless you had a passenger (manual trans and no p/s). I didn't like the speakers in the kick panel so I removed the stock dash speaker and modified (chopped up) the speaker frame and mounted two JBL 3 inch round coaxial speaker to what was left of the speaker. The only change I would make is I was not able to adjust tone for the front without affecting the rear. Easy fix now. Also the newer head units with a USB port , mounted under the seat with a remote ,seems like the ticket. 8 gigs of music can go long time without repeat. I left the factory radio hooked up to the front speaker and just turned it off to crank up the volume.

Thank you all for the feedback.
I had seen those after market replicas and they look good but as you pointed a bit expensive. Just need to figure out which route to take, thanks.

Dumb question but what does AC has to do with Kick panels? On Ebay the kick panels come with a description of NO AC. Why?

Some kick panels have fresh air vents built in to them when you don't have a/c.

Thanks 4speed455 - this housing for under the dash looks great. I will see if they can make one for gauges and stereo since the gauges already takes that spot. Thanks

Hi Fellows - opening up this thread again for the follow up question. Now that I have the quick panels ordered and the awesome dash housing I am looking for a decent radio. I found the one below at Amazon but it recommends buying a radio wire harness with i but none that I found are compatible with this car. Since the car is so old do I need a wire harness? If so what do you suggest? Thanks.
