70 AM/FM radio trouble

i took out this radio in 1996 and it worked fine. i put it back in in 2002 and it don't work. does anyone know what could have gone bad from sitting. i kept it in a dry place and packed very well. i know that it is the radio and not anything else. i do get a thump when i turn it on but that is it.

Dust and moisture are the enemy. If you are sure that you have all wires connected, you could use some old TV tuner cleaner on the tunning mechanism. It is still available at Radio Shack. It comes in a spray can and is great for cleaning old electrical stats and stuff. Has a lubricant in it also. Works great for those volume controls that crack and pop, that is caused by dirt and dust getting in them. This stuff blasts them out and lubricates the control. It is designed for electrical use so no worries about compatibility with radios.

Second thought, if this is a 1970 and it has a stereo AM/FM in it, it is a 2 peice system. The other channel is in a component up behind the glove box. Could be a connection there or a problem internaly.

Hope this helps

I would be carefull with using the cleaner from radio shack. I used some once on a radio and it caused the plastic components to melt and the volume **** got stuck after i sprayed it.

Be sure to get the one for the cleaning of the TV tuner. It is deigned not to be caustic or aggressive.
