No idea...

Removed the back seat in a C/S...and this gaping hole is there. Any ideas ...? Thought it was funny...

No, they are above this axe hole ... just odd.

Any sign of prior mounting of a fuel pump, like for racing?

It's hand-sized. If you stick your hand through there, can you reach anything (upper control arm bolts, other stuff) more easily than through another route?

Yes, it is where the seatbelt anchor was....and then some.
I was thinking the same...that somebody wanted to do something out the back...no sign of racing...

upon closer inspection id sat someone hit the brakes hard and the seat belt anchor ripped out. the edges of the hole are very thin and rusted

I agree with the guess that the seat belt anchor ripped out. Its kinda oval shaped, and slightly smaller than the hole.

Here's a couple pictures of the seat belt anchor. It is a pretty good sized plate.

Lol...that what I thought at first.

The metal is in good shape. I am leaning towards somebody wanted access to the **** end for whatever reason...

Good point...maybe the PO was parting it...the left fender and disc brake setup had already been sold....saved the ol girl just in time. 👍

I bet that was it! If he was parting it out he may have wanted to have the complete set of seatbelts.
