15" SSIII wheels
15" SSIII wheels
I'm pretty sure that they were never made, but I figured that I would ask anyway. Were the SSIII wheels ever available in 15" size in addition to the regular 14x7's?
When I bought my '71 a few years ago she had the original SSIII's on, but the ride height was so low (and the tires dry rotted) I went out and bought some 15x9 Cragers in addition to new tires. I love the wheels but every now and then I look at them and wish I had kept the original look. But I was just tired of bottoming out on every speed bump with the SSIII's.
Anyone else have this problem, and what did you do to solve it?

Yes there's plenty of ss3 snap on ctr cap in 15-7 size that's what's on my 72 right now. The 83-84 HOs n 85-87 442 also had this size in a chromed version mine are painted. I just sold a nice set to another member a while back as well.
But if your car bottoms over bumps it's likely to need new springs or shocks or both, many time despite the larger rim diameter the over tire height can be close depending on the tire size chosen.

FYI, the only difference between SSII and SSIII is the paint color. Read the SPECS booklet and the dealership literature and you'll see that the SSII/III distinction is only argent vs. body color paint.
Bolt-in centers were used from 1968-1974. 15x7 versions were used on the 1969 H/O and were factory options for 1973-74. Starting in 1975, snap-in centers were used and those wheels were also offered in 15x7.
What are you calling "SSIII"?

Sorry. I did not look past 1972 for the wheels. I was reading an article on oldsmobility.com, and apparently did not look far enough down in the article.
