Make him a lowball offer on it to buy it from him. It seems he may not even know the value of what he has!

several years ago there was a nation wide contest that had a mint 55-57 T-Bird as the grand prize. a local 17 year old kid was the winner. this dufuss was using that car like you would a 5 owner 93 Lumina. rain, snow, slush, it didn't matter. that car could have easily been his college education.

I feel your pain. I've been watching an original 67 camaro RS SS slowly sink into the ground for the last 10 or so years across the street from me. The car was clean when it came out of 15 years of garage storage. He's not interested in selling, and he is not a kid since he bought it in the 70's.
Bottom line. It is his, and he can do what he wants to it. He can torch it, turn it into a donk, part it, or let it RIP in his yard. Not what I would do but it is not my car.

My neighbor has a '69 Charger R/T he starts a few times a year. Keeps it stored in the weeds. He's Joe Dirt with a fried brain and won't part with it.

A few houses past my grandmothers house a man had a 69 Corvette L-88 he let set for 12 years. He parked the car with nothing wrong with it. It set until they dig around to be able to pull it out and junk it.

During this past snow storm we recieved I seen a younger guy (late teens early twenties) driving a 72 cutlass 442 in the snow with salt and snow plows everywhere.
It was a nice looking car body wise, didn't see any rust yet.It had chrome cragers all around and chrome sidepipes.
I thought to myself,"that poor car is going to have it's life shortened big time with that kind of use".

Hi,
Yes,it was a blue cutlass,I seen it in Hebron. Was that you? or someone you know?
I'm actually from St.John.
I haven't been to any shows yet, just brought my car home on halloween. I'll be hitting some cruise in's this coming summer though, don't know how my car would do at a show.
Any good cruise in's in the Hobart area? or anywhere else?
To start off until I learn the circuit around here,I'll probably be hanging around the square in Crown Point,Rt. 2 in Lowell,Miami subs in Schererville and Dunkin Donuts on Ridge Rd. in Gary.
If you see me anywhere, please stop and introduce yourself,I'm always open to chatting with fellow car guys.

I shutter the windows in my garage. Just in case the Cutty sees bad weather outside. Can't be too careful ya know.

weather and cars

When I was 19, I bought a '64 Olds 88 convertible in NW Pennsylvania that had already been done in by the winters and the salt. I had a new steel bumper support bracket made to fix the lack of frame for the rear bumper. It was my first car and I loved it - especially in the summertime. As my only car, I had to drive it in whatever weather came along, but I can tell you this: In the winter snows - I went out all night long to brush snow off of the convertible top, and I regularly hosed off the undercarraige while I owned it. It was too late ultimately to turn back the years of rust, but I did everything that could be done to give that car as many years as I could while it was on my watch.

One does what they can, then .....

Well, I'm 17, but certainly not dumb.

Unfortunately, I no longer own an Olds(parted with the wagon 3 days ago), but I still hold some ground here. I drive a 78 Thunderbird, and its now my only car. I HATE driving it in the snow. Kills me when I drive on a freshly salted road. But, its the only thing I can afford. It costed me $1,000, and I have $600 left to go on it(I owed a few hundred in other various expenses, too....thanks dad). Trying to pay it off real quick so I can save for the move in WV. Thusly, I have no money to invest in a beater.

Point is, you never know the situation. My car is almost flawless, except for one dent. All original, runs and drives perfectly. Almost a show-winner, hence why I hate to drive it in the snow. But come on, nothing else i can do, within reason, except wash it weekly and keep the snow off it(and I do).

It is a real shame a nice car like that Cutlass has to be driven throughout the winter months. Hopefully the kid isn't just some dumbass, and can afford to have a second car by next winter. I know I'm going to be setting myself up with one in a hurry before next winter.

Why is it??

Why is it that every old car needs to be coddled and collect cob webs.

My son and I fixed this 1967 Cutlass up for him to drive to High School and beyond. It was a numbers matching Holiday Coupe, that what, is worth maybe $15K restored. Not hardly worth it!! SO we fixed and freshened what we could, and its a nice driver.

It's a great way for a father and son to bond in their teen years!! Keeps the line of comunication open with a common interest.

My first car I bought in 1993 was a 1972 Cutlass S.

I drove it through every season.
Cars were made to be driven, not sit in garages as trophies.
Just my .02

I think you're damned if you do and damned if you don't with some people.
They complain that the newer generation has all these fart pipe ricers that can't do jack.
Then they complain even when the young generation has an interest in classics and drives them.
You can't win.

I have my cutlass, and I try my best to not let it see snow... I have another car to drive, so I guess I'm lucky, but if I didn't, I'd try my best to borrow my parent's car or my aunt's... I don't want to drive it in the snow if I don't have to, mainly because of the salt.
My wagon was a secondary car for nearly 20 years and even that only went out in bad weather when it HAD to, and that was from new to 1991. Since then it has been our workhorse, and though it has been caught in rain both while doing a job and when we were at a cruise night, we try are best to keep it in when it's not nice out. It has seen snow once in my lifetime, and that's because we absolutely had to...
My cutlass though, when it comes down to it is my backup if I ever need a car and the acclaim is down... So I do what I have to, but I'll be out there with a hose hooked up to hot water washing down the underside every time it sees a salted road.

kinda miss driving one all the time, was thinking bout getting one to drive all the time.

this is a pic of a 63 Galaxie I am helping build.
the owner says he going to drive every day.
the whole bottom is rino lined now.

That's an idea, rhino line the entire car, underside and inside all the panels. As long as the paint is on the outside, it'll have no way to rust...

I guess I think of it the opposite way. I think it's a little silly to only drive your nice car once in a blue moon. Cars were made to be driven, nothing lasts forever.

Let's go to the opposite end of this thread. A guy that my mom works with keeps his departed brothers ('69?) Plymouth GTX, Hemi w/ factory dual 4bbls/4spd car inside his garage. Very, very, very rarely does he back it out of the garage to do stuff inside the garage. I've seen it outside MAYBE twice in the 20 years or so that I knew it existed. And of those two times I got to see it up close once because I stopped and asked about it. Show room fresh with less than 5k on it. *sigh*

Yes, salt is very corrosive.
Rain and snow aren't great either, but are not nearly as bad as salt. Rain and snow carry dirt and get it into places where you can't clean and then act like a sponge holding moisture against the metal also helping rust.

I'm with you... I'd much rather watch someone enjoy their car, drive it to the store to get bread and beer, fix it right if you can afford it, but keep driving it. A garage ornament is nice, but by the time I'm dead, I will have enjoyed my car to the fullest.

I'm always happy to see any Old Car on the road at anytime of the year. If that kid gets his Car dirty who cares. The point is these Cars need to be on the road. What's the point of owning them. Now will I take my car out if it's pouring outside? Hell no, but mostly because I don't want some Jack *** who can't drive hitting me. I see a really Badd *** 55 chevy everyday on the road, rain or shine and it makes me smile everytime. The guy loves his Car. Isn't that the real point.

I agree with driving every day as a dd, if that's what it's intended for. There's an old guy, probably in his 70s, that still tools around everyday in an early 70s bonneville or catalina vert, rain, snow or shine. It looks to still be really good condition. I know it's him because when he goes by my place, his straight pipes wake me up

Mike's88, Thanks I thought I was going to get clobbered for my opinion. I'm in the Far south though and except for Rain it's easy to drive the oldies almost any month down here.

Well up here around Chicago, you won't see much of anything older than maybe 1990 on the road in the winter. That is, unless it's so rusted, it's not even good for parts. Salts so bad, even vette bodies start to rust
