Would it be a crime?

Would the Oldsmobile Police arrest me ? I am the second owner of a 1986 Cutlass. I have had the car almost seven years now. It is almost always garaged , not driven in the winter since 1989. It is in very good , very original condition. I don't like the anemic 140,000 mile 307 so much, or the 2:14 gears, or the single exhaust.

I was thinking... I have a fresh from the machine shop 403 with 9.5:1 pistons and I have a TH 400 or a 200-R4 and I have a 2:41 rear or a 3:73 rear. And I have dual exhaust set up. Plus a new Edelbrock 3711 intake. I would only have to buy a carburetor and headers.

I could save the Vin Y 307 and put it back if ever I decided to. I have a buddy who thinks the car is worth more money stock and that the car is going to be valuable some day. I advertised the car for sale 4 times for $4,000 and never even got a single phone call or e-mail. You can't paint a car for Four grand now-a-days.

This car.

Sorry, I don't think an '86 Cutlass will ever be worth anything, either sentimentally or monetarily.

Stick a Lear jet engine in it and paint it with a roller as far as I'm concerned.

The Oldsmobile police are overtaxed going after the people putting 454s in their H/Os - they don't have time for litterbugs.

Go for it and enjoy the car. You are not committing the cardinal sin of putting a chevy in it. Don't worry about the resale. It is not a 1970 W30 or a 69 Hurst Olds.

Fo reals...I mean...you've seen what happens to these things in urban areas...they spend more on rims than the entire car is worth and expect to get their money back when they sell it. Check NYC, Chicago, Miami, and LA craigslist and you'll see what I'm talking about. Leave the wire hubcaps on that bitch, too...a REAL sleeper...haha

nice car ,I had a 84 Brougham with 82k and sold the car on ebay for 2900.00,I think your 86 looks better, maybe after the mods the car will be more appealing due to the "lack o power" that boat anchor engine does not provide. Good luck what ever you decide

No issue whatsoever. Its your car. Drop it in & enjoy. If its a car you drive a lot def go for the 200R4 and maybe even think about a fuel injection for it. That would be a sweet set up.

That's funny! Go for it, our hobby is all about making your car what you want. Why, cause it's your car.

When I first started to read this I thought you were going to ask about putting one of those Chevy boat anchors in it. It's just an '86 Cutlass. A nice car but nothing rare or collectable so throw that 403 in there!

Wow, IMHO if the '86 was as clean as stated and in my area, I would have a hard time passing it up.

DO IT!!

307 "Y" sucks for power, but it's a runner. If it was a "9" motor maybe hurt the value of the car (442, or Hurst)

Granted my 85 442 already had the OD trans and 3.73 gears, but replacing the knocking 307 with a knocking 403 [then fully re-doing the 403] was a great improvement. I do not have trans lockup except manually but that works for me. "Check Engine" light I find amusing. Yep, it's still there.

I agree with the previous posts. This car is a perfect candidate for a 403. I do have to disagree though Eric that these cars aren't worth anything sentimentally...my poor beater doesn't look like much, but I sure love it.

P.S. Octania, all you have to do is remove the control board from the check engine light driver behind the glovebox if you ever get bored with having the light on. I took mine out, but I can see the amusement in leaving it in ha ha.

Well, technically speaking....... the Oldsmobile police's H/Os already came factory with a 454. They just rounded up.
