I thought the title would be appropriate considering the 'most beautiful' thread that is also on this forum

Not a bad choice. I've always held that honor for the 1978 442. One step away from a Pacer!
Ran into a guy at the 2009 Nats in PA that had a really nice black '78 442. Started talking to him about the car trying to hide my above opinion of it, when he himself started in on how ugly is was! He thinks they're quite ugly to and that was part of the appeal to him. He has so many "Its so ugly..........." descriptions of the car that he had us laughing for quite some time.

Damn Cheeseheads!!
It looks like Lenny and Squiggy pounded down a few too many Shotz beers and had a "Wouldn't it be cool if?" moment.
I wonder if they took it to "The Fonz" and had the transformation done at his shop?
I concur, the 1978 Buttless Cutlass/442 is so ugly it could scare a train into taking a dirt road.

I saw that one at the Nat'ls this year and yeah it was ugly but I have always wanted cars that you don't see everyday and I guess this car fit the bill. That is one of the great things about Olds- you just don't see a lot of them.

I thought the same about the 78-79 442's but then I saw one that was very clean, black and gold with the SSIII wheels and it changed my opinion. I actually thought if I found one in decent shape....I might.... well I don't know. My buddy had a 1981 4 dr Omega and I swear dogs would bark at it when they went by. I think Olds got back on track with the 1981 Cutlass and was going in the right direction with the 1983 - 87 Hurst and 442's.

I don't know. In the mid seventies the Cutlass was the best selling car in Canada and the US. In 1977 they sold over a million for the first time in their history. I've heard people say Olds was doomed when they downsized in 78 but then they sold 1.1 million cars in 1985. In those years, everybody downsized. My mid-sized mid-seventies 442 is longer than my Montana minivan.

It's not the colors necessarily, well maybe it is. OK then, it's the goal posts on the rear deck. Well, maybe not. It could be the long front with the 'hole in the hood' for somebody's feet, yeah that's it. Oh heck, the whole thing was an exercise in destroying what was an originally beautiful vehicle.

Wayne, that's kind of why I bought mine. It had been on C.L. for a few months, and looked so lonely. I thought I'd give her a new home. Kind of like taking in a stray dog, they all need some love.

As a former Wisconsinite, who remains a loyal Packer fan, who currently resides in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, who is married to a native Dallasite and Cowboy fan, and whose family once owned a '64 98 (great car), there's a appreciative spot in my heart (not in my brain) for the green and gold behemoth.
If there were a few more key autographs on it from the Lombardi era, it might draw more interest (probably from Packer fans more than car hobbyists). The Packers organization could purchase the car and display it in the atrium at Lambeau field, or auction it off.
My parents still live in Wisconsin, and they have a 2-car garage. Perhaps . . .
NOT!

If it was closer to me, I'd buy it. Will never be a collector but that is not why I buy a car. Is it ugly, heck yeah- is it different and will it get noticed - for sure. A quote guy I used to work with used to say this about women and it applies here - "Even the ugly ones need lovin' and I am just the guy to do it"!

The third gen Toro was extremely popular up here in snowland too. It seems about half the families I knew had a 77-79 Delta 88.
The Ciera may not be anyone's cup of tea, but they sold tons. My aunt had 2 white ones in a row and my mom had a sharp two tone one at the same time.
Guess I'll quit belly aching, but the Olds world had a lot of love after '72.
And yes, that poor Olds Packermobile is an embarrassment, but it fits right in with the VW bug with goal posts, the school buses and at least 1/2 dozen other weird Packer tributes that run around the area!

Wow Ken you found your 78 - 442 and its only $500. It looks like its in really good shape so it goes to show you how far downhill they went in the late 70's. I can remember the first time I saw one , I thought to myself how some idiot would stick 442 badges on such an ugly car.
I like the one in Calgary and for $500 it's a steal. If I had the space, I'd probably buy it. But we have 4 cars now and only Karen and I drive. Now, the 1981 Omega sedan...you couldn't give one to me.
I like both of these cars. But I'm like Wayne, I like the cars you don't see everyday. Hence my 1976.
