Woodward Dream Cruise

[QUOTE=s i 442;581407]Perhaps your car is not Hot Rod's target market. The magazine is not about marques but, rather, hot rodding, which runs the gamut from California customs to Bonneville speed cars.

I had a great time, but I agree with TK-65, there were waaaaaaaay too many daily drivers and pickup trucks with people sitting in the bed, and of course, way too many new Camaros, Mustangs, and Challengers. The one new car I was hoping to see on the road was the new Vette Stingray. I saw one on I-96 east of Milford last week and it is wicked looking (and I don't like Vettes), but my friend who works for GM said they wouldn't have any out on the road That car is going to make anyone who bought a Vette in the last couple of years sorry they didn't wait.
Indiana is too far to travel from? We were privileged to host Fred (Nufo on this board) from Escondido California. He hung out with us for a while and it was great to have him with us. He drove his '67 442 here and had quite a trip.
I also got to meet Jimmy B. and cutlassjoe from this board as they stopped by to hang out for a while, check out the MCR Oldsmobiles and let us check theirs out.
I wish there was a way for them to close the road down except for classic cars, but #1 there's no way for them to do that, and #2 there's no way anyone could ever agree on what types of cars to let in.
Bunser, I'm glad you stopped by too, but I have to admit, even though we would have helped the guy in the Sunbeam Tiger anyway (we appreciate all cars, just happen to LOVE Oldsmobiles), the owner of the Tiger is a member of our club. He just felt like bringing the Tiger instead of his '68 Hurst Olds. I thought that was cool as I had never seen one before.
Pat, you and Ryan are welcome to stop by every year (as is anyone else). It's nice to see cars that are not our own and meet the owners. We don't really rent the bank lot, we have an agreement with them, we can use it and in return we keep their lot from turning into a free for all, we monitor and make sure their customers are welcomed in (they are open from 9 am to 1 pm on Cruise day and their ATM is open always) and have a place to park while they transact bank business. We charge our members and any non members who want a space all day. Half of the money raised is a fundraiser for the club, the other half goes to a charity of the bank's choice. We try to keep a couple of spaces open for people (like you) who just want to stop by and visit for a short time. We used to be at the Wendys south of 13 Mile Road, but when Biggby Coffee (now it's an Olgas) bought the place they wouldn't even talk to us about letting us be there. The bank is a better place anyway as you can actually get out and cruise.

I made it to the cruise, seen many Nice Oldsmobiles.
And I was driving home going down 96 westbound, in the slow lane and I come upon another Oldsmobile looked like a 69 442 going slower then I was, I pull next to him and gas it a bit, he hits it, he pulled me a bit, my kids are like DAD he beat you...lol.
I said well I do have 5 people in my car and a trunk load of stuff. Good Times.

As a sidebar, Ryan and I came down from Lansing via I-96 to M-59. A sad for a Caddy owner he had watch his burn! M-59 just barely west of the loop.
The fire extinguisher was one thing that I did not throw in the trunk.
It will be there next year!
Pictured is the style and color that was on fire, not to cool to take a picture of someone's rig while it's on fire!

I had a fantastic time Saturday! It was so nice to cruise with another Oldsmobile for most of the day. Starfire I can't thank you enough for the hospitality you showed Pat and myself! I greatly appreciate letting us join you for a few while the Hurst cooled for a bit. You guys have a great spot!
I do agree with many on here saying how there we're way too many daily drivers this year. The girlfriend and I had a running joke going on how many Mustangs and Vettes we could find paired next to each other. lol.
All in all it was a great turn out. I got in around 11:30am and left right before they shut down the road around 9:30pm. It was nice to see the array of different vehicles ( minus all the daily drivers that just wanted to drive thru ) the weather was perfect, awesome people, the Hurst only got slightly warm on me once during the whole day ( to be expected ) I already can't wait for next year!

Wow, I'll have to remembre this for next year. I have been to 2 Dreamcruises and I tell anyone who hasn't been to one you must must go!!! The first one was awesome, the second one was a bit overwhelming as it does get crazy crowded - I don't mind newer cars, even foreign cars etc, I just hate that Camry's, Accords, Suburbans etc are allowed on the street. But knowing there is a place I can just cruise in to take a little break and head back out would make a day trip next year worth it. You either have to spend a few days there and soak it all in or just do the crazy Saturday - I prefer a few days as the nights leading up to it are the best - in my opinion.

Wow that is awful. The first one I went to was about 10 years ago and it was nothing like that. Mostly muscle cars with plenty of antiques and some cool new cars with an occasional late model straggler in there. In that image out of the 20 cars going the same direction, one definitely should be there, 3 others I can see jumping in for the cruise but all the rest?!?. Wow

After spending ALL DAY Saturday at the WDC, I have mixed feelings about the event...
First off let me say THANK YOU to Alan (Starfire) and the MCR for the generous hospitality and great discussions regarding classic cars. It was nice to get out of the car for a couple hours and relax. I think your location at the bank is PERFECT !
I arrived to the dream cruise from the Pontiac side (North) around 2pm. Cruised around for about an hour and found the MCR club where I let the car rest for a couple hours. We decided to take on Woodward around 4pm and by the time I made it back to Square Lake Rd it was about 8pm. I have to admit I was a bit worried about the car overheating throughout the cruise, so a few blasts of heat through the defrost seemed to keep it in check.
I'm not sure if the traffic was normal, but it seemed to remind me of sitting in Detroit traffic jams at times and not so much enjoying the "cruising" side of things. I believe there were a couple of accidents that plugged things up a bit more than normal too.
My car seemed to get a lot of attention. I received lots of "thumbs up", a few 10 signs, and even a couple people running out into the road to take our picture . I agree with most people that the majority of cars on the road seemed unimpressive. However, I'm not exactly clear on what the WDC really stands for . Is it supposed to be a classic car show? Or is it just a cruise free for all?
After two and a half hours of crawling, we made it to 11 Mile Rd. That's where we decided to turn around and go back North. Just near the 12 Mile area, I was finally talked into "lighting em up" by 3 hot girls on the side of the road... BIG MISTAKE. Within seconds, 3 cops in a golf cart pulled behind me and lit me up. The officer asked "why did you do that right in front of me?" I wasn't exactly looking for golf cart police at the time, so I had no excuse. He checked the cooler in the back seat and checked my ID. Both were good so he let us go with a warning pretty quick. Overall, he was a nice guy just doing his job. After I put the car back in drive the fans were all cheering me. Seemed weird though that out of the 100's of burnouts I heard and witnessed, I was the only one pulled over for smoking the tires.
About another mile or so up the road I saw a crazy accident where a newer mustang had gone over the curb and smashed into a tree. This was around 7:30pm on the Southbound side. I can't believe there weren't any serious injuries given the amount of people sitting in that area. I snapped a quick photo of the crash.
We cruised by the MCR club again and kept going up toward Pontiac. This is where things started getting CRAZY! People were doing burnouts left and right, spectators were pouring bleach on the street and cars were getting way out of control. One kid had his Mustang 5.0 sideways and I decided I've seen enough. Exited on a side road and got the hell outta there.
Overall, it was a cool experience. Not sure I would go every year, but the car was well received and people were friendly (even the cops).
28th Street cruise in GR this weekend will be my last cruise of the year. Then it's time for some more restoration.

Pontiac is crazy, they don't ticket for burnouts (I don't think Pontiac has a PD anymore, I think the (relative) order in the town is kept by the county sheriff.
We saw people getting pulled over and ticketed for burnouts right in front of the bank. This idiot in a yellow pickup truck did a huge one with a Bloomfield Hills PD Tahoe two lanes over and a little bit behind him. The officer had him pulled over a little bit down the road.

I guess I am not to cool. I took a photo as a reminder to always make sure the fire extinguisher is in the car. It looked like the fire was confined to the engine compartment. The car should be able to be saved but it is going to be expensive.

Just to close the story, I believe I've solved the bogging issue. When I got home, I changed out every foot of vacuum hose (it needed it) and found several serious leaks .. which made her idle better, but still had the highway bog. Next I changed out the fuel filter ....

There's actually loose powder in there. I guess dropping the tank is in my future.
