Boasting 650 horsepower, Penelope is what happens when you resurrect a classic 442 Oldsmobile with $150,000 in the sort of bells and whistles its original owner could never have conceived, like a GPS system flagging local speed limits, or a rear-view mirror posting digital temperatures. Blomster is the first to admit she may have gone overboard. "It's like cosmetic surgery," she says. "It gets to the point where you've just got to stop."
The car belongs to my neighbor. I own a correct '70 4spd 442 convertible, but she definitely enjoys her car more. Although heavily modified, and not really to my taste, it is the perfect set up for very long distance road trips. It performs better then the original in every way, and she has driven the mileage to prove it.
