Wife stranded update

My wife who was 300 plus miles away from home when the dash on her 2000 olds silloette went dead has made it home and we now know the problem.
The complete dash cluster needs replacement. We found a good used one and will have it replaced. While it was in the shop we found @ $300 in front end work that needs work!! YIKES. Today they replaced the belt pulley and belts.
Can't afford a new car but hate the needs this car needs.
Thanks again for all your help.

Start saving your money to replace the intake gasket if its not already been replaced. Its a major pita to do in that van and its not a matter of if its when it starts to leak.

Your van IS 11 years old. I had to put about $1800 into my then 8 year old Dodge truck last spring. Nothing unusual or out of the ordinary. The truck had just under 100,000 miles. Stuff wears out.

How many miles are on your Silhouette?

So does the new cluster have to be programmed? Sounds like a pain for sure.
This further supports my arguement that electronics and cars do not mix well...

Gearheads 78 you are right on.... the gasket was going and we replaced it two years ago. The tranny fluid was puke brown so we replaced it with a rebuilt. The cluster does not need to be reprogrammed.
I agree with you LADY72. My 64 is simple ( in a classic car world) to find a problem. Plus 90% of the time we can fix it w/o the long and costly trip to the mech. Last weekend I rebuilt the wiper motor and washer, nice to be able to fix something in your own garage. If the wipers had all the high tech crap on them I would never had touched it.

My mother-in-law toasted her 1998 Intrigue engine and I bought the car, put in an engine with 60,000 miles ($750) that had the intake gasket replaced and now it's my son's car. My 2001 Montana had the same issue but I was driving and didn't destroy the engine. Had it placed under warranty when I told the dealer I dought it from that theu new about the problem when I bought. They fixed it for free.

I bought a 2001 Aurora and found that the gasket was changed out under warranty in 2003. GM was bad for these gaskets failing. Good luck.
