I am always amazed. I wonder if Joe was born in an Oldsmobile on the way to the hospital.

I have never met the gentleman but he has my respect.

Best I can figger out, He's an MIT grad, aeronautical/space engineer who is Wilard Scott's neighbor [northern Va. = outside D.C. for our Aussie/Eurpoean members] and who chooses to generously share his vast knowledge of Oldsmobiles on several boards/and forums.

He also seems to not care for every 68 442 to be wearing non factory stripes

Other than that he's easy to get along with as long as you use the correct motor mounts and don't give him incorrect header information.

He's a bot that is programed to automatically respond to a post with a question mark.

When there is a public appearance to be made this bot hires and electronically pays a super nice guy to pretend he is Joe.

I think Mr. Padavano has forgotten more about Oldsmobiles than any of us will ever know.

If you need to know the proper etiquette to use if you meet Joe P. just substitute Alice Cooper for him and Wayne and Garth for a couple of us mere mortal Classic Oldsmobile members in this video.

Joe's the man

(He's really just a computer generated composite created by the all of the geniuses that were let go when GM shut down Oldsmobile. It is there way of getting even)

Met Joe at Carlisle 2 weeks back. He appeared real to me, however I thought his beard may have been computer generated.

If you Google search "Joe Padavano is wrong" you will generate zero results. It just doesn't happen.

Actually, that's Chris Witt, but I do have a degree in Aerospace Engineering and I've been building real rockets and satellites for the last 30 years.

Ironically, my folks owned a (56?) Buick at the time, but dumped that and got a 63 Olds 88 wagon shortly after that, followed by a 65 F-85 Club Coupe and a 68 Vista that became my first car.

In books? OK, now SOMEBODY owes me a royalty check...

My ex-wives would beg to differ... With them, I'm just cursed.

Seriously, thanks for the kind words but you all need to stop this before I'm forced to install a double door in my office to fit my head through. Let's just say that I've owned about two dozen Olds A-body cars in the last 35 years and I've pretty much broken everything you can and made every stupid mistake you can think of. If anyone has a copy of the Oct 1985 Car Craft, you can see one of the cars (that later got away in the first divorce).

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Oldsmobile programming.

I was looking at an Olds flat top wagon on ebay the other day. Someone had created a "442" wagon out of it. In its description, the person stated,

IF OLDSMOBILE MADE A 442 WAGON IN 1972, MY WAGON WOULD HAVE BEEN IT. FOR YOU OLDS NUTS (MYSELF INCLUDED), I DON'T BELIEVE THERE WAS ANY SUCH ANIMAL. (BUT JOE PADAVANO COULD TELL YOU FOR SURE...HE IS AN OLDS ENCYCLOPEDIA)
Joe's even famous outside of the forum too!

The best thing about Joe is he shares his knowledge. There are several/many knowledgeable Olds people out there, but they rarely take the time to post. Some of them are really good at pointing out what is wrong with Olds restorations after the fact though...

Based on Joe's reply that his parents got a '63 Olds shortly after his birth, I'm guessing he will turn 48 in 2011. Still a pretty young guy to have so much knowledge!

I wish!

I guess once you cross 50, the term "shortly" has a different meaning.

I was nearly five when they got the 63 wagon. You can do the math.

Actually, there is no Joe Padavano. He's like Norm's wife Vera on Cheers or George Kaplan in the Alfred Hitchcock movie "North by Northwest." Often spoken of, but never actually seen.

Joe, I had to bring this thread back to the top. I just wanted the newbies to know
about our great "Rocket Man." I also wanted to say thank you for all the knowledge
that you share so freely with the folks who really love the brand, Adam.

I too have learned more by making a mistake and then having to redo it. The beauty of this site is hopefully we can benefit and learn from the mistakes and experiences of others.

Joe is a real PITA on this board.

After he offers his input, there is generally nothing to add, correct, or take away. Just pure raw correct knowledge, concisely laid out and in proper spelling and grandma. [sic]

No drama. No bickering. Nothing for the rest of us to add except, "yeah, what he said" or "me too."

I do vaguely recall spotting what I though was an error once in a JoeP post. Much like bigfoot or the SMW 403, the fabled "JoeP Error" is talked about and thought to possibly exist, but good luck actually producing one.

PS Joe would be the actual _rocket_ scientist, whereas I adopted the handle *the* [pronounced "theee"] Rocket Scientist when I started in on ePay about 1997 or so. I believe "Rocket Scientist" was already taken. Besides anyone can be "A" Rocket Scientist, so I just made it into "the" RS. I have dabbled in model rocketry and water bottle rockets, but nothing over 5-6 ft tall, and very much suborbital.
