Wheels/tires for 71 Supreme

Greetings,
Have just purchased my dream car... '71 Supreme, and am looking to replace wheels/tires. Any pointers on actual rim size and "proper" tire size to fill the differing front/rear quarters would be greatly appreciated. This is my 6th Cutlass and am now in a position to do it right. Will post pics and previous rides as I familiarize myself w/ this site.
Thanks in advance.

I used F70x15 on SSII rims on the '71 I used to own long ago. I liked the way they fit. Not sure what modern size that would convert to, being radials and all. Had a set of J78x15 but they were too tall.

Thanks Dan,
I'll take your info to the local tire Guru, Joe at Marion Tire here in Omaha and have him do his voodoo. Thanks again for your knowledge.

lol 14 or 15 inch wheels. NO BIGGER !!! thats all you need to honestly know, then you get the tires as wide as possible on the back, and as thin as possible on the front

Let me know what you find out, I've got 14X7 SSII's on my '70, and would like to go just about as big as possible. Thinking along the lines of 245/60 or around that.

Glad to see a fellow Nebraskan here! I live in Norfolk.

I'm running 235/60/14 currently. Previously ran 205/70/14. These are comparable to the old F70 size if you want your speedometer to read correctly. The 15" size should be similar.

Don-Those look nice. If not too much work, could you post a pic from the front or the back that show the tire width, in relation to the car? TIA.

Staggered look

I'm also searching for that nice tire combination although I'm switching from 14 to 15" wheels. I was at a car show yesterday and saw an older camaro with 275/60/15 on the back and 235/60/15 on the front and it looked really nice...if you don't mind the staggered looks and aren't concerned with rotating tires. Anybody know if this wheel/tire combo will work on a 72 Cutlass without rubbing? Anybody else running this setup?

That's exactly the combo I have on my 71, and it fits/clears just fine. Looks great too.

Omicron, can you post a pic of your ride with those tires on it? Also, what width wheel do you have? My 15's are 7 inch so not even sure the 275 tire will fit on them.

Sure Scott. My wheels are 15x8 SuperStock (III's ? but not sure) from the mid-80's Olds 442s. For me it was an ideal compromise as I wanted to stay Oldsmobile and 15 inchers (to me, larger just don't look "right" on the car) and I always liked the look of the Olds superstock wheels anyway. I also wanted to get a larger tire on the back, which as you noted, your choices are limited if you go with 7 inch wide wheels.

Anyway, here's some pics. Sorry for the lousy lighting... it was a cloudy day here when I took these.

Hey Omicron, nice car and wheels. Also, are those Wheel Vintiques? If so, how do you like them? I ask because I've heard some folks on other boards complain about runout problems with thier wheels.

Sorry to thread jack. Just haven't seen many Wheel Vintique wheels here.

Don

yeah, I definitely like that look but is your suspension/springs stock? Mine seems to have that Olds sag in the back.

Thanks for the props. No they are not Wheel Vintiques, or if they are the the guy on eBay selling them doesn't mention that. Here's one of the guy's listings.

What are "runout" problems?

I love mine. Only problem I had was the center hole was slightly too small on the front wheels, so we had to machine the center "protrusion" on my stock break rotors a bit to allow them to fit.

Stock but new springs, front and rear. Front springs have not settled yet, so it's still about an inch higher in the front than I hope it will be once settled. And I too have the sag problem in the driver's side rear, although it's not as bad as it was. Still looking for a good solution for that sag.
