What's the point? (another CL contraption)

Except for someone to point AT it and say what in the hell is that thing???

http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/2319390220.html

I just don't get the attraction. If I were going to spend this kind of cash on a car, it would be an investment for a future sale, not a money pit that has little to no value down the road a few years. Can you imagine attempting to convert one of these back to stock if it were a rare car?

Oddly, I saw the first one of these things on the street just yesterday.
This one was a Cadillac, bright Barbie Pink with gigantic pink rims and skinny tires that I am too uneducated to identify by name. It was quite....striking.

Sat at the four way stop with it, and when it was it's turn it barreled across the intersection as if we wouldn't notice it without the added aggression.

It reminds me of a house that is near mine. It is a classic, extreme mid century modern house, by a famous architect... but they painted it bright, swimming pool blue, and then painted the street numbers across the garage, 8 feet tall in bright orange....some people just want to be noticed, I guess!

Ludicrousness aside, these "creations" are usually used for two reasons: either as an advertisement of a shop's skills ("We can do this for you, too!") or to try and "out-do" other club members/gang rivals/whatever.

Problem here (OK, ONE of the problems) is that the work is VERY poorly done. There isn't a single aspect of this car that stands out as being of a proper (or expected) "quality," so unless you're competing against a car-building team of blind chimpanzees, you FAIL.

Instead of being a "show" car, it looks like a half-a$$ hack-job cartoon car, and yet another "Let's throw $hit at this beast and see what sticks" crapmobile.

"Hello? Yes, I have a 'serious inquires' [sic] for you: WTF?!?!?!"

Now THIS, on the other hand, is how you do it:

I appreciate that he put the model year on the door so that everone looking at it would know immediately what year it was.

Why??? If anyone pulled up to my shop and wanted this done I would show them the door, but I guess that's why I don't run a "chop shop" either.

I swear that orange sedan looks like the interior was done using bolts of random cloth found at Odd-Lots that happened to be close to the exterior paint color (and matches Odd-Lots color scheme as well???) and installed with just a staple gun.

I'm pretty sure that KathleenF could have done a better job on the interior after seeing her $28 seat covers.

I think I had a set of those chairs (buckets?) in my old college dorm years ago in 70's green vinyl.

the point is ....you made all this money selling crack, but you can't leave the hood/bario or you'll get shot. so you go two blocks to the local chop shop and give them 50k ( chump change) to do that. then you get to drive it around the block until you get shot or arrested. when I lived in Dallas, I had a co-worker (an immigre') whose cousin was a street dealer. he spent all his money on a 77 Thunderbird (gold plated and diamond studded everything) because he didn't know what else to do with it.

Yeah, I know this happens. I'm wondering if once they sell the car, and THEN have a legitimate source of the income and can spend it in a normal manner, is this whole process considered money laundering? Wondering why local law enforcement or RICO doesn't step in to look at some of these cars built with tens of thousands of dollars to see if the owners have earned the income legitamately. Would the shop doing the custom work of this type be considered part of a criminal enterprise? I may have to make some discreet inquires. I have some contacts in law enforcement...

Txtom, that is really sad, but undoubtedly true.

my72vert, that is a beautiful car sitting way up there! Geeesh!!! With my knee, I couldn't even get in or out of it. How hard would it be to put it back to ....normal? I just don't see these things around here, even at car shows or meets. Just that Barbie Pink Caddy....shudder.
