what type of oil to use in the a/c compressor
what type of oil to use in the a/c compressor
Just got my new A6 a/c compressor and I had a quick question. What type of oil is supposed to be put in. The instructions state to put 3oz in, but they do not specify the type. I've been looking on the web and have heard everything from regular to mineral oils!
I plan on leaving her set up for r-12, but to be honest, I could care if the a/c works or not. The only reason that I am replacing the compressor is because it completely locked up a year ago and started burning the belt. I'm just tired of looking under the hood and not seeing a belt where one used to be, it's the OCD in me. The little things drive me nuts.
Any help would be appreciated.

"Mineral" is the original type, but is not compatible with R134.
It is the best to use if you want to stick with R12.
"Ester" oil is the "universal" oil, which will work with either R12 or R134, but it is not the "best" for either.
PAG oil is for R134 ONLY and DOES NOT mix with R12.

The service manuals called it "525 Viscosity Oil". Three ounces sounds a bit on the low side unless it was shipped with some oil in it. The normal oil charge on a replacement A6 compressor is around twice that much. And if you change the drier also that's usually worth another ounce of oil.
