What should a Windshield Cost for a 68 Cutlass

I was told my windshield has scratches from the wiper blades, and they can't be buffed out.

Car is a 68 cutlass convertible. They're quoting $865, which includes windshield and installation. I'm quoting shenanigans!

I looked on the OPGI site and a new one costs 160.
http://www.opgi.com/p/glass/3585/191/CH28691.html

He said b/c it's a convertible the price is higher.

Right now I couldn't care less about scratches on the windshield, but I am curious about the cost of replacing one.

I'll welcome you input!

Thank you!

Rhett

I am not sure about the 68 - but for my 71 I paid $72 for a new windshield WITH the antenna in it. They are surely trying to rip you off at $895. the $160 quote on opgi sounds much more normal, and should be about $100 labor to put it in.

Replaced one a few years ago, 340$ parts and install. I was told being a convertible makes it easier......

Having done auto glass in my youth for about 6 years - I can tell you convertibles do make it easier not harder to get the glass out and in - the roof gets in the way, when you are cutting out the old one - and when dropping in the new one.

shop around buddy at your local auto windshield shops. I about 8 years back had one bought and installed for about 180 dollars if you are not after a totally correct piece of glass. I am a strong believer in not putting in your own for a variety of reasons also.

With the hardtop the 1968-72 A-body glass will fit, the difference is the antenna in the windshield. I suspect, but don't know for sure that convertibles would have the same interchange years/makes.

I found a local shop that will do a sale/install for around $200.

I had the one in my 69 cutlass 4 door replaced like 3 years ago, the guy showed up, pulled the window out, treated all the rust behind it, after it dried he installed a new one, the tag on the windshield said (68-72 buick convertable w/o antenna), the whole operation cost me 450. tell whoever is quoting you 800 something to take the windshield and shove it

And remember: Convertible and non-convertible windshields are DIFFERENT.

Would a vert windshield happen to be the same as a 4 door? I just pulled a set of beautiful A pillar pads in black from a 4 door, cleaned em up all pretty and was so excited to have gotten them for my 2 door, only to find out they are about 2 in. longer than my 2 door version.

So I'm wondering if since the trunk lids are the same on a 4 door and vert., if the windshields are too. ('69).

Convertible and 2 door hardtop are the same windshields. John is right you can find them installed very reasonable. I bought a new one from a local shop for $145 and installed it myself. Being a convertible is much easier. I would never go back to that shop due to their inflated price.

At least for a 70, the hardtop windshield is definitely different than a convertible. I paid $160 at a local shop and did install myself as I did not trust it. I think on one hand it pays for a professional to do it and on the other hand, have you seen some of the kids doing the work? Had my company car done, they smear the urethane and it runs all over and then had to get it redone because it leaked later.

My father and I did my Cutlass and it was fairly easy.

Absolutely not. The parts book shows a different part number for a convertible windshield compared to the 2 door. And 4 door is yet another part number. 68/69 carry different part numbers than the 70-72 models due to the latter having the antenna in the glass.

Less than $130 for the windshield alone on my 66 on this site. You could probably install it yourself.

I looked up yours and it was $153.77

Installing it is not the hard part: clean the area, apply sealant, place windshield.

Removing one, especially if you want it in one piece, is tough.

The glass guys have some very nifty tools to get the job done quickly and easily, but installation is well within the abilities of the average guy.

Removal ( I have done several) is really not that hard, I have used piano wire and military "comm" wire, the hardest part is getting it threaded through the old seal stuff. Once that is done, one person sits in the car and another outside and you "saw" with the wire. I have had some where it takes only a few minutes to go around the perimeter and then some that take an hour or more. Not hard to do but can be time consuming.

Now I'm told the glass I found from OPGI might have "imperfections" and "it might not fit correctly"

He would replace it with "original" glass which costs 415. Labor and other parts would push the total to 865.

This is really torquing me off! I'm not going to drop $900 in an effin windshield! Are you kidding? I don't care if the glass was made from ancient Israli sands! I'm not paying that!

Thank you all for your input!
